Hi everyone,
I am a former GRZa member reaching out to see if any of you might be interested in, and have the mental energy to, support hotel workers to fill out unemployment applications over the phone.
My friend and colleague at Berkeley just talked to Lorena Lopez, Unite Here, Local 11 director (they represent hotel and service workers) in LA and she informed me that all the hotels are letting everyone go. The ones with a union are committed to pay for their health insurance until September, but not salary. Non-union hotel workers don't have any support.
The union will provide a training about the process in these upcoming weeks.
If you have the mental space to dedicate some time to this, it will be greatly appreciated-- and I also know that this is a very emotional time in many ways, so I understand if you need to prioritize taking care of yourself right now.
If you are interested in doing this, please contact Aaron Greenberg at agree...@unitehere11.org, so he can coordinate trainings based on interest. Spanish-speakers and speakers of languages other than English are highly appreciated.
Thank you and take care,
Dani
