Assistant / Associate Professor – Urban Geography
The Department of Geography at the University of Toronto
Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for a tenure-stream position in Urban
Geography at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, effective July 1,
2014.
The Department seeks a candidate with a strong background in quantitative
research as well as a research and teaching program focused on critical urban
issues including, for example, migration/immigration, health, urban sprawl, and
transportation. The successful candidate must have a PhD in geography or a
related discipline by time of appointment or shortly thereafter, as well as
demonstrated excellence in scholarly research and teaching.
In addition to developing a strong research program and engaging in teaching at
the University of Toronto, the successful candidate will be involved with the
research and teaching activities of the Center for Urban Science and Progress
(CUSP), a collaborative network involving New York University, the University
of Toronto and other international universities and partners (http://cusp.nyu.edu).
CUSP is a unique public-private research centre that focuses on
research and developing technologies for the critical challenges facing the
world’s cities, including infrastructure, transportation, public safety, and
public health. The successful candidate will be one of a number of targeted
CUSP faculty hires across the University of Toronto as part of this exciting
initiative.
The appointment will be at UTM, which has a strong interdisciplinary commitment
to teaching and research, a multicultural student body of 12,000 students, and
a modern, spacious campus, where the appointee will be expected to develop an
externally funded research program. The successful candidate will also hold a
graduate faculty appointment in the tri-campus Department of Geography and
Program in Planning at the University of Toronto, a department with strengths
and interdisciplinary linkages in physical and human geography and the
environment. Active participation in the UTM Geography and Environment
undergraduate programs, as well as in the graduate program of the Department of
Geography and Program in Planning is expected.
