The Department of Geography at the University of Tennessee is excited to announce a new university wide program to provide enhanced monies for highly qualified graduate students at the PhD level.  Known as 'top-off dollars' these funds are specifically designated for highly qualified graduate students to enhance current graduate stipends.   The Department of Geography at Tennessee is composed of sixteen-research active faculty who are engaged in cutting edge and meaningful research.   The department has historic strengths in dendrochronology, biogeography, soil and sediment analysis, urban geography, as well as transportation and GIS.  More recently, the department has developed additional program strengths in human-environment interaction and modeling, applied meteorology and climatology, climate change and environmental history, and a host of human geography themes.  These themes include population, migration, & politics; race/ethnicity, identity, & social justice; globaliz
ation, industry & trade; and qualitative research methods.   Students who attend the university work alongside award-wining and renowned scholar-teachers committed to mentoring and collaborating with students to address issues of social, technological, and environmental change. The department is located in a state of the art building on the campus’ historic "hill" and students have access to Oak Ridge National Laboratories, Science and Engineering Research Facility (SERF), and the Claxton Center for advanced computational studies.   Our faculty, students, and staff hail from a diversity of backgrounds, cultures and world regions, and we welcome prospective students from all walks of life and disciplines.  Students who attend the university live in a top-50 metro area with close access to the Smokey Mountains and the Cumberland Plateau.   Students with exceptional records are encouraged to apply.   Review of applications will begin at the end of January.

Interested students are encouraged to check out our website:
