to Graduate Mathematics Foundations
By Monday, Dec. 3, please post and print a piece (1-2 pages, at most),
of your own mathematical writing. It would be best if it were typed
(using LaTex), or scanned. If you have trouble uploading a file,
please let me know, and I can post a file on your behalf. The writing
sample should be mathematical (not the introduction to a paper). It
should be written with an audience in mind - please be clear about the
target audience. It might be an explanation of some calculus
concepts, written for your students, or a piece of a math paper or
thesis that your are writing as research. It could be a mathematical
introduction to fractions, written for middle-school teachers, for
example. It should not be informal lecture notes written for
yourself. You may use something that you have written recently, or
you may write something new specifically for this assignment.
Here are some things to be aware of, after our discussion today (Nov.
28):
Aesthetic Considerations: Font, Form/Layout, and Density of
Information (spacing).
Tone: Beware of condescension, intimidation, overly dry, and overly
flowery writing.
Clarity: Are ideas understandable and explained. Good notation, and
symbolic language. Proper grammar, and clear word choice.
Audience: Is the style and level appropriate for your chosen audience?
