The double-headed eagle stands today for that which it stood in ancient days, its two heads, facing the Ultimate Sun, reminding Scottish Rite Freemasons there is yet even "more light" for the pilgrim who travels East, and in whose heart is the motto, SPES MEA IN DEO EST." (My Hope is in God). Taken from the Education & Enlightenment section at www.scottishritecanada.ca.

The tau cross and serpent of the Twenty-fifth Degree, the sun of the Twenty-eighth Degree, and the cross of St. Andrew in the Twenty-ninth Degree are indeed fraught with deep meaning, both historic and esoteric, but none can claim a more romantic or significant history than that of the Thirtieth Degree, that of the Grand Elect Knight Kadosh, or Knight of the Black and White Eagle. As an emblem this eagle is the epitome of religious and symbolic history, and to trace the winding flight of the double-headed bird is to survey the whole course of civilization, from its grey dawn north of the Persian gulf to this modern World. Its flight from the plains of Sumeria marks the rise and fall of the great mother religions of the world, and it was well on its journey, by some fifteen hundred years, when Moses found a name for the God of Israel.

As a Masonic symbol this device is time honoured and appropriate. It is no less the badge of the Grand Inspector and Sublime Prince than that of the Grand Elect Knight. As the symbol of the Inspector it suggests an equal contemplation of both sides of a question-and thus, judicial balance. It is seen as the fitting emblem of an elect knight in ancient religious engravings, and to the exclusion of the cross itself, it appears upon the banners of the knight and prince who behold the apparition of the virgin and child of the rosary. And, as in ancient Mesopotamia, the double eagle is here associated with the sun symbol in the form of the Chaldean Elu, which the knight and prince wear, evidently with the same ancient meaning: "The light toward which my eyes are turned."

Thus does the double-headed eagle stand today for that which it stood in ancient days, its two heads, facing the Ultimate Sun, reminding men and Masons that there is yet even "more light" for the pilgrim who travels East, and in whose heart is the motto,

The bodies of Joe Norman and Joey Durrum were found on the side of the Brooklyn Bridge on the Jessamine-Mercer County line. The body of Jacqueline Greene was found in the Kentucky River below the bridge. Each of the victims had been shot to death. David Warner, who lived on the Jessamine County side of the Brooklyn Bridge, became suspicious when he noticed a light blue Ford van and a dark pickup truck lurking at various points around the bridge. At one point, the pickup truck parked on the bridge, a person got out of the passenger side, and Warner heard a big splash. Forty-five minutes later, Warner heard a noise that sounded like a car hitting a guardrail or a sign. He looked out to see the blue van and the pickup truck speeding off across the bridge toward Lexington. Warner called the police.

When the police arrived, they found two of the victims on the side of the bridge, each bound with a blue-and-yellow rope that was attached to a heavy rock. The third victim was found in the river below the bridge, wrapped in a sheet that was also bound with a blue-and-yellow rope and attached to a heavy rock. A traffic sign near the bridge had been knocked over by a vehicle. It had paint smears on it and broken glass lying at its base.

Also recovered from 215 Loudon, by the police, was a plastic blue-and-yellow rope identical to that found tied around the victims' bodies. Paint samples taken from Halvorsen's van matched the paint smears found on the highway sign near the bridge. A comparison between pieces of glass taken from a broken headlight on Halvorsen's van and pieces of broken headlight recovered from the base of the highway sign proved them to have come from the same headlight. Lastly, blood samples from Halvorsen's *923 van were positively identified as having come from one of the victims.

In a death penalty case, a juror should not be encouraged to take lightly his responsibility in fixing death as a punishment. Our statute provides that the jury can only recommend the death penalty but that the actual sentencing is the responsibility of the Judge. Jurors should not be led to believe, however, that they should keep the option of the imposition of the death penalty open by recommending it because the Judge can reduce the sentence if he feels it is not warranted.

Much of Freemasonry's ritual is comprised of verses from the Christian Bible, a copy of which was presented to each new Master Mason during their Bible presentation ceremony. It is from the Bible that Freemasons seek more light.

"Observing the Craft" is about the necessity of revisiting and re-embracing the true spiritual light within Freemasonry through study and a deeper understanding of its principles.

This book provides an excellent introspection into the need to go "back to the basics" within our lodges, and it rightfully calls each member to be a guiding light to assist both new and long-time brothers to truly learn the meaning of the Craft, and not simply be satisfied to only memorize the words within the ritual.

Sergeant Mickey Hutchens succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained five days earlier after responding to backup another officer at a domestic disturbance call.

A man had gone to a local fast-food restaurant on Peters Creek Parkway to confront his ex-wife. When officers arrived on the scene they encountered the male subject behind the restaurant. The suspect, who was wanted on several warrants, fled on foot.

Both officers pursued the man behind several businesses. A struggle ensued during which the suspect pulled out a handgun and opened fire, striking both officers. Despite being wounded, the other officer was able to return fire and killed the suspect.

Sergeant Hutchens was transported to a local hospital where he remained until succumbing to his wounds five days later.

Sergeant Hutchens had served with the Winston-Salem Police Department for 27 years. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

On November 6, 2011 the bridge over the Yadkin River on US 421 was dedicated to Sergeant Hutchens. The bridge links Yadkin and Forsyth counties, the town where he lived and the city that he worked in. It would have been his 53rd birthday.
