Hello everyone,

I sent the CfP to Philipp Ther and got his answer. It is "already good" as a "work in progress" and suffices for internal discussions, according to him. This is what he sent me (some thoughts he had spontaneously, some of them I translated into English, but otherwise it is an uncensored version):

- if we want to connect to Skinner/intellectual history "demarcation can be built upon polemics which is usually directed at the own group of reference and can be seen as a speech act"
- system theory: "If transfers happen inspite of resistance against them, why do they happen? Because systems (cultural codes or societies) are already so interconnected that individual demarcation does not change the impact of transfers? Do we get back to system theory, to models of interdepedency?"
- demarcation does not tell anything about intensity of transfers < thinking about decreasing communication and transfer relationships

I think there is one problem: he has his very own conception of what "demarcation" should be. After all, he came up with the notion. Obviously he thinks in the lines of "transfer through negation" (the things he wrote himself, I didn't read the stuff when I wrote the first draft so I had a very different interpretation of the notion). Should we try to include the stuff or should we ignore it? Or wait? Budapest and Antonella will have comments themselves, I guess. I haven't read Skinner, so I don't know what he is talking about, and I am quite stressed at the moment with my work and an article, so I don't think I will go to the library tomorrow in order to read Skinner and something about system theory. Does anyone of you guys (Magnus and Joonas) know something about it? Maybe you understand Philipp's thinking better as you are dealing with cultural transfer yourselves.
Apart from that it is quite incredible how much work it apparently is to write CfP. Shouldn't we dare to leave things more open and sort all of these things out in detail during the conference?

Please tell we what you think about it, Fredrik

Ok,
I think that this has been the problem from the beginning. One knows the idea and others are trying to guess it. Nevertheless, the CfP is already good, so why dont we just wait for the further comments, and afterwards we can add few lines about the system theory. It is not a big thing.

Hello to you all,

an important question: is anyone in Florence? It would be great if someone could clear out the most important practical questions with Francesca Parenti (travel and accomodation), apart from that we have to have an e-mail address for applications and we have to agree on the length of the abstracts. So that we finally can write the last part of the CfP. I have sorted out who is responsible in Budapest and when the CfP is finished, we can finally send it to all the involved.

Hope you all are fine, Fredrik

Not in Florence, sorry.

About the length: The previous two GRACEHs have had 300 words as the
abstract length, so I suggest the same.
And about the e-mail: Can't we ask Francesca to get us an e-mail
address, which we all can access? I can do that.

Ciao,
I met Francesca, but she could not help that much, yet. 23 rooms are reserved from the hotel Villa la stella for the period 27.4-1.5. After tomorrow's departmental meeting we will be informed about the budget.
I created graceh2011@gmail addres. Do you think it is proper enough?

Hello,

I think February 1st sounds better, it's one day of difference, but another month, which is psychologically another thing. we are quite late with the CfP-preparations, so it would be good to have "February" in the text, what do you think?
Then we have an address for the applications, very good. Do you have some information about the budget already? Francesca somehow was not sure about who would pay for what, she has obviously lost some correspondence with the organizers of the earlier GRACEH edition in Florence. Otherwise we maybe should contact one of them, Jannis or Pascale or someone. But I think it still is clear that two nights in Villa la Stella will be paid for by the Institute, additionally some part of the travel costs for those who are outside the two (now three) partner institutions. But we have to double-check and make a calculation as soon as we now how much the budget will be.
Joonas, do you think we can finish the CfP this week then in order to send it to Budapest and to Antonella?

Best, Fredrik

About the issue of writing a paper before the conference: We can announce that later to the participants that are accepted. One thing: the conference date is 28th-30th April (only the hotel rooms are preliminarily booked from the 27th to 1st May, as there are mostly people who prefer to stay longer or come earlier, but these will have to be adjusted and coordinated with Villa la Stella as soon as we know who is coming). I can contact Budapest with the completed version of the CfP now (I am afraid we are already quite late). Is there someone who wants to contact Antonella and discuss the issue with her?

Hello,

I sent the complete paper to Antonella Romano and the Budapest people. Daria, aren't you in Florence soon? Maybe it would be good to have someone who can communicate directly with Antonella.

Best, Fredrik

PS: does someone know about the procedure how to get the CfP on the road? I have no idea how to disseminate it. But let's wait for the comments. I just thought, maybe we still should reformulate the paper a bit and focus more on "successful transfers" despite demarcation, that would open up the range of possible topics and interpretations.

People,

There was indeed a website last time, http://graceh2010.wordpress.com/.
But the eui have to help us with this, so we should push them a bit.
There should be something up and running from the previous years.
Anyone able to do this?

I'm currently in Amsterdam at this masterclass-thing with lots of
potential participants, and want to spread the word. So, when can we
actually publicize this cpf? Can I at least tell them the gist of it?

Lastely: About reading the abstracts in February: We should have an
action plan allready, and I propose the following: After the deadline
the ones in Florence go through the abstracts within a week (which was
the deadline last year as far as I can see) and write back to the
accepted student. Perhaps most of us are in Florence then (due to the
third year monitoring the previous week). At least I am, but I need
some help.

Hello,

Antonella proposed a minor change of the title - "Transfer and demarcations" instead of "Transfer and demarcation". It makes sense - in order to ensure a broad range of topics we deliberately did not define "demarcation" in only one way. Do you agree?

Fredrik

PS: I did not know of the website, maybe a good idea - even though I do not know what we could post there besides the CfP. If there is anyone in Florence during the next two weeks, maybe someone could ask Francesca Parenti. Although I do not know how well she is informed. Otherwise we should ask Jannis or Pascale...

Dear all,

I think the distribution of the cfp is becoming quite urgent. Here is
a plan as to how we can get this show on the road. Honestly, it is
becoming quite ridiculous.

1. Please send out the last version of the cfp with practical details,
Joonas or Fredrik.

2. If anybody has comments on this, they should let it be known before
Sunday. By Sunday evening, we should have the finished version ready.

3. The ones in Florence, Daria and ??, go to Francesca and demand her
help with disseminating the cfp. The EUI is the organizing
institution, and she, or some other secretary are obliged to help with
this. What she should do is a) transfer our version to a official
paper of sorts, either by using the regular eui letterhead or what
they had on the website, b) publish it online (the url should of
course be included in the cfp document itself, I have never had any
cfps which cannot be axessed online.) and c) e-mail it to everybody
conceivable. They should have mailinglists for this. This should be
done by Wednesday, so that by Thursday 2nd Dec. the cfp is out there.

Sorry to be so uptight about this, but I feel that this is a pressing
issue which needs to be addressed asap.I'm also sorry for just
ordering people around, and not doing it myself but I'm attending a
workshop with draconian working hours this week (13 hour days, not
kidding).

So, action!

Love (!) Hanne

Dear all

Hanne is, of course, right, but we should start to think of who we would like to invite as keynote speakers, so we can ask them as soon as the cfp is ready.
About getting the cfp online; maybe we should just see if we get it on the EUI webpage, it may be faster than trying to find out who controls the old greceh website.

Dear all,

This is the version I sent to both Antonella and Budapest (NB I already changed the title according to Antonella's suggestion). I asked Emily Gioielli, who is one of the responsible CEU people to contact us before Monday next week in case they have any urgent wishes to change the CfP in some points. So far, I have not received anything.
I am attending a conference Friday to Sunday and will be back in Tallinn first on Monday, so I do not have so much time to change the CfP radically.
Did I send you Philipp's considerations?

Here is what he sent me:
"- demarcation can be built upon polemics which is usually directed at the own group of reference and can be seen as a speech act (see Skinner, intellectual history)
- If transfers happen inspite of resistance against them, why do they happen? Because systems (cultural codes or societies) are already so interconnected that individual demarcation does not change the impact of transfers? Do we get back to system theory, to models of interdependency?
- demarcation does not say anything about the intensity of transfers (think about decreasing communication and transfer relationships and not only about the increase of cultural relationships and communication)"

If you consider some of these thoughts to be essential for the CfP we could add a sentence or so.

Joonas, could you then do the last editing (you mentioned it once)? You others, just shortly comment on Ther's reflections, then we know how and whether to change the CfP before sending it. I think that we surely could add one or two thougths, but it is still only a CfP - we cannot include all the interesting aspects, this is a thing to be done during the actual discussions as well, I think.

Best, Fredrik

PS: And I agree with Hanne - someone at the EUI (maybe Serge Noiret if not the secretaries??) could easily help us with the publication, the institute does these things all the time, it might not be difficult. So if someone is in Florence, please contact maybe first Francesca and if that does not work Serge or another HEC administration staff member.

Ciao,
Last night I read the cfp over and over again and tried to think how I could take philipp's comments into account. Apart from Skinner, I think that Philipp meant that we should be more precise and neutral without making strong theoretical claims. Thus, I made some little changes in order to make ithe text more neutral. There are now two lines reffering to system theory colored in yellow. I dont know if you agree to erase them.
And what comes to Skinner, I really dont know. I tried to read him in order to get some ideas about his theories on demarcation but i didnt find any. Besides, i dont know what is so special in Skinner's idea anyway. I think that Fredrik had already written implicitly about rethorical acts.
Indeed, Fredrik's paper was already so good that it was diffucult to make major changes.
I will send you now the version I checked..
By the way, who are the official organizers of the conference. EUI and CEU?
The dissemination of the cfp is, indeed, wise to do through EUI. In addition, we all can send it, after it is accepted by Philipp, to relevant national history internet web sites.
I am now finishing my archival trip in Vienna.  I will have internet connection today until 13.00. I will be in Florence already on Monday. So I can also contact people there then.

I have just read the cfp with Joonas' notes, and I think that we should just send it. Though ,I fully agree with Phillip, I don't think that his comments need to make it into the cfp, as they are already covered by the scope of the conference. It is something we can discuss at the conference and at the moment it is much more important to disseminate the cfp than try to make sure it is 'perfect'.

You were right, Joonas, I erased the two points you mentioned. The text as it is now has been sent to Philipp, then I hope he will be ok with this final version. I just changed the headline: we are the organizers, but do it "in cooperation" with the CEU. but maybe also with Vienna, I forgot to ask Philipp about this. We should only agree on a contact address for further information - should we maybe write all our addresses as the organizing committee or is that too much? On the other hand, no, the whole committee should be mentioned at the end of the CfP as well as the responsible professors. Who are: Antonella and who else? Philipp is not at the EUI anymore. So should we just add our Committee and Antonella and choose one person who functions as a contact person for further questions? Ok, I am off for the conference, Fredrik

Just a complementary information: the cooperation with Vienna is already official, so we should mention the University of Vienna (Universität Wien, maybe even Historisch-kulturwissenschaftliche Fakultät) in the second line of the headings of the CfP (that means organized by EUI in cooperation with CEU in Budapest and the Univ. of Vienna).

I put University of Vienna in the second line and listed the names of organizers, including Antonella Romano and put graceh 2011 gmail address for further contacts.

I also wrote to Emily to ask who managed wordpress page (http://graceh2010.wordpress.com/about-2/) i think it would be nice to update it, since it contains info on previous conferences. If it is possible, i'll try to do that before December, 1

Tomorrow I am going to see Francesca et al to ask to publish cfp. If anything else has to be added let me know.

About the key note speaker: What about Matthias Middell, from Leipzig

although he is a very busy man (like all these academic stars) he is
very nice and approachable.

Hello,

Just to let you know: Emily wrote that the Budapest people all were very happy with the CfP and Philipp Ther has also been satisfied, I think. Thank you, Daria, for taking over the practical stuff. Matthias Middell would be interesting to invite, Hanne, I agree, surely Philipp knows him, so we could ask. Otherwise Philipp already organized Wolfgang Schmale, he is coming for sure. Hm, maybe there will also be a way to counterbalance all the Germans to get a larger variety, we'll see. Actually I cannot pop up with a Swede in the field, and Estonians and Poles don't see too active in the debate either. Someone from your home countries?

Dear all,

I talked to Francesca today and we agreed that i will send all materials to her by tomorrow, so that she can publish it.
I also made this graceh 2011 page, which can be developed later with more details on keynote speakers, program and other practical stuff. But for now - we just have to get it going. Here it is. http://graceh2011.wordpress.com/

I wrote short invitation and used GRACEH history page written by CEU fellows (I agreed to use it with Oana, who was responsible for the web page last year.) The call for papers is the same, and the practical info page is very empty so far.

Let me know what you think, and i will send it to Francesca then.

People,

Francesca asked me to prepare a preliminary budget to be presented at the next deaprtmental meeting on th 15th of December. Attached is the budget of the 2009 GRACEH. I can do that, but i was wondering if anyone had preliminary discussion on the budget. Or all that we know for sure is that we booked villa la stella for around 30 participants. And that also means that we really have to decide on how many keynote speakers we can have.

I haven't talked to Francesca about the budget, as her comment was "who is paying for all that?" when we talked about that in summer. So I was assuming that she will go through her earlier mail exchange from 2009 with the other organizers, as this was what she told me. So I have no idea about the possible amount of money. All I asked her to do was to book the rooms at Villa Schifanoia (two sale for the presentations and the Bandere for the coffee breaks) and the Villa la Stella reservations. Daria, could you check that the reservations all still valid and allright? That means the Schifanoia rooms (I don't remember if it was Belvedere and Europa or the cappella instead for one of the two others) for April 28-30 and the Villa la Stella reservations from 27 April to 1 May for... I think we said 30 people? It is always better to double check.

Thanks, Fredrik

Dear all,

I have prepared a preliminary budget with the updated rates for rooms and food. The crucial questions to be negotiated are amount of money available for guest speakers and money for partial travel reimbursment for the participants.

As for guest speakers, I cheched the previous GRACEH conferences, and it seems that there was always one external guest speaker, and several from partner universities. The expenses of the external one were covered. In our case so far we have Philipp Ther and Wolfgang Schmale, who are coming from partner university, so we can afford to pay for Matthias Middell for sure. Did anyone contact him? And the other question is if we can have second external guest speaker like Magnus' supervisor or whatever swedish or polish scholar.

As for student's travel expenses I put 15 in my calculation (because i believe at least half of the participants will be from Budapest, Vienna and the EUI) and I put only 134 EUR, which is half of what EUI gives as a standard fare for the flights in Europe (268 EUR). If we manage to get at least this money - i would consider it to be a great success.

As for accomodation - i was told by Francesca - that usually the EUI pays for single rooms, and those who want to have double rooms can compensate the difference. Another thing that I remember, i might be mistaken though, is that I payed for accomodation in Budapest myself. What the organising commitee did was booking cheap twin rooms. So actually if the EUI can cover accomodation, as we promised, it is actully very good.

To sum up, my budget is more wishful thinking. I agreed to meet with Antonella on Wednesday to discuss it. If there is more clarity about guest speakers by that time that will be very helpful.

Tell me what you think about this calculation,

Best,
Daria

Hello,

I got an email from Philipp Ther, where he confirmed that all the Vienna participants are paying themselves. We can calculate without taking them into account, although it would be grate, according to him, if there still would be money left over in the end for the hotel of Schmale or other participants. But we can count without them so far.
This year in Budapest, we got a fixed amount for every participant from Florence from the EUI for the travel and, additionally, the CEU covered two nights per person in a double room in Budapest. So we can count on support from the partner institutions for their own participants.
For the guest speakers: did Antonella name anyone she was thinking of? Should we ask Philipp whether he has already some personal contact with Middell?

Good, thank you Fredrik, so it seems like we definitely need money for accomodation and partly for travel grants but only for people with different affiliations than CEU and VU and some money for guest speakers.

Antonella didn't mention anyone so far. Can you please drop a line to Philipp asking about Middell or if he had anyone else in mind, so that i can coordinate this with Antonella and put it in the budget.

Cheers,
Daria

Dear all,

Good job, Daria! If you get this through, you are truly a miracle
worker!

As for guest speaker: Lets ask Romano and There before we contact
anyone, but in any case the contact for Middell is middell@uni-
leipzig.de.

Also thought I would try to distribute our cfp through this German
website for historians, http://hsozkult.geschichte.hu-berlin.de/index.asp.
Its suppose to be very good.

Hello,

I sent a mail to Philipp about Middell. Let's see what he says. And Hanne, hsozkult is indeed the very best forum at least for the German speaking part of Europe. Can you fix that?

I'll get it out to Hsozkult by the end of the day. Do we know if there
is anything like this for UK? We should get it distributed there as
well.

I also sent it to the big Norwegian unis and HIFO, the association for
Norwegian historians.

Dear all,

I talked to Jannis about their experience about getting money and what they managed to get covered and I met with Antonella today to discuss what is possible to get from the department. There is no way we can claim for 7000 EUR. As clear as that. But we can get at least the same what GRACEH 2009 got. So:

1. We can get 4000 for sure. The budget was drafted for 17 participants, so we can claim for getting more since we plan to get more people.
2. How many people can we get. I drafted the schedule for 3 days - we can squeeze in from 7 to 8 panels (see sheet 3 in the file), meaning 21-24 people max. If we pay only for 2 nights, we can not start too early on the 28th and we can not finish late on the 30th. They did that in Budapest last year. But that means that we have to make clear for people from the start that they have to find money on their own if they want to participate in the entire thing (the program will force people to stay for 3 nights at least then). Antonella also opposed to the idea to have parallel panels. i personally think, that it is not a good idea either. If we indeed want to create a forum for sharing ideas and get things done at the conference room, it's better to have all crowd to be together all the time. So i redrafted it according to that number. Otherwise people escape for discovering Florence....
3. Accomodation: 2 nights in shared rooms for all participants can be covered. If people want to stay in single rooms they will have to cover the difference. It was the same practice everywhere before.
4. Limited travel grants can be available only for external participants. Partner institutions have obligations to cover these expenses. The question is how many external people we will have. I suggest we at least get 1/3 of externals. Antonella suggested to leave 500 in total for travel expenses, as you see I put it in my alternative calculation. However, since we have more people and we can claim for a bigger budget, I will reserve 1000 for that and will see how tough the debate gonna be.
5. within this budget only one guestspeaker can be covered, including 2 nights in the hotel, travel expenses and one day allowence. My feeling is that if we get another external female speaker we can negotiate it 8). But the department (and I completely agree on that) will not be paying for professors from partner institutions when we have not enough money for researchers!

So what does it all mean for us - that we can get a rather small conference - but then we really have to get the best. And then I would push for reserving money for external participants. Alternatively, we can opt for Budapest scenario and invite more people but make them understand, that the resources are very limited and it is up to them to find money for the entire thing.

What does it mean for the future - I would say that then we need to involve more institutions. And I suggest to organise a workshop on the April 30th on how to organise next GRACEH conference. It seems like there are issues to be discussed. We need regulations, we need website and i think we need a real steering committee representing all the sides and somebody willimg to put some thoughts into the future of this thing. It is growing, but departments can not accomodate these expenses in their budgets, we have to think about it.

But first things first, so what you say about this way of calculation. And what would be your priorities, once we have to squeeze in 4000 or maximum 5000 EUR.

Best regards,
Daria

Hi Daria

Thanks for taking care of the budget, and talking it over with Antonella. I have just had a brief look at the budget and it all seems fine, but I can't find the schedule, it is not on the 3rd sheet in the file. Anyway, you do raise an important point about how we organise the conference determines whether people should stay 2 or 3 nights. It may be easier to decide once we have see the schedule - and thanks for drafting that too btw.

Best

Magnus

Dear Committee people,

what I did not know: we should of course invite Wolfgang Schmale as the Committee, Philipp told me. He is waiting for an invitation. Otherwise, Philipp gave some comments on the key note speakers. He would vote for Michael Werner in Paris rather than for Middell. As he states, Middell is quite hermetic in his speeches and always keen on his own method interpretation and now he is totally preoccupied with global history. So, Michael Werner is a hint (we should then ask him not to touch upon his Histoire Croisée only) or Etienne Francois, whom I have not heard of, but he is supposed to be food. Finally Philipp proposed Jakob Vogel from Cologne as another possibility. Maybe Antonella knows the French people? Anyway, we can only afford one outsider, right?

Dear Fredrik,

I think it is a good idea to invite Schmale to the Commitee, can you please write on the behalf of the steering committee to him. As for guestspeakers, it seems like indeed we can't afford more then one. Antonella didn't express any preferences though, but I can ask her again.

Let me know if there are any other concerns about the budget that i can communicate to the department on Dec, 15.

Best,
Daria

Dear all

I may have been mistaken but I kind of took it for granted that both Ther and Schmale would attend as they represent Vienna? However, it did occur to me that if we go for Ther and Schmale and then either Middell or Werner, the conference is getting a rather heavy a Germanic bias, and that may not be what we want!? I must confess that I am afraid that if we invite Werner and a French scholar, the whole matter in going to be about French-German transfers or French-Germans Histoire Croisée, which has taken up much of the transfer literature, I know, but it would be nice to move beyond that - for once.

So let’s try to think of who else to invite: I have thought about Astrid Surmatz, who is Dutch/Swedish (I think) who may not be one of the great ‘transfer-Germans’ but who has done some research that I at least think looks interesting. (http://home.medewerker.uva.nl/a.m.surmatz/index.html).Also,

I know that this complicates matters, and that we have to invite people soon, so if we have no great idea about whom to invite alternatively, within the next couple of days, I won’t object to invite Middell or Werner – I would actually very much like to see both of them.

About the budget and the schedule I think that it looks fine, so, Daria, I think that you should go ahead and ask the department.

Best wishes

Magnus
