Let's go for Werner if Antonella has no objections or better
suggestions.
We can actually make the Franco-German dominance a theme and a problem
for the conference: Why does transfer history seem to resonate so well
with the French and the German, or something like that. But I agree
with Magnus, we must stress that this is not a histoire croisee-
conference. Two years ago, I also seem to remember that some histoire
croisee-people were at the institute for the Summer school.

I have also sent the cfp to Hsozkult. I have had some major problems
with their website, so we'll see how it goes.

ciao,
Werner would be also my choice. Etienne Francois would be a good choice as well, but it seems that he is doing also German-France -transfer. Therefore, he would not make any difference.
Astrid Surmatz looks very interesting, too, but could she speak about demarcation problems? What do you think, Magnus?

Dear all

I don't know if Surmatz can do a presentation on demarcation, I only know what's on her CV, but as demarcations is a part of all transfers, I would say that it is likely. Whether, she consider demarcation in itself to be a topic of her research I don't know - but then, nobody seems to do. To find out more I would have to write to her, though it is, of course, slightly tricky if we decide not to invite her. So, what do you think?

While we could make the Franco-German dominance a problem of the conference, and it would indeed be relevant, though, I think, that it is too late to introduce a new topic. Besides, I was hoping not too much time on purely Franco-German matters, and if we made it a problem of the conference we would have to discuss it at some length - and what I really fear; relate everything else to it.

Best

Magnus

Dear Magnus et all!

I would vote for the woman, and I think this choice will be very welcomed at the department! and may be it will help to avoid franco-german focus. we will deal with it, but not as a primary subject!

Just my 2 cents!,

I have now asked this http history.transnational site to publish our
cfp. ://geschichte-transnational.clio-online.net/transnat.asp. It's
actually quite nice, and a Middell and Espagne collaboratory effort.
Same people everywhere...

That's great Hanne! Good job. About the budget. Antonella talked to Yun and got informal approval for the conference's budget, therefore it was decided to present it at the next departmental meeting in January, when all other money related issues will be discussed. So any news from keynote speaker - hunters?

Best,
Daria

Daria. No, I haven't asked her yet. I can't really ask her before we are sure that we want her to come. How about you Hanne, have you asked Espagne yet?

But we need to decide who we want, so we can move asap – the budget only leaves room for one external speaker, right?

Everybody, please, write back and tell who you want as keynote speakers.

Espagne has never been an option, has he (and don't think he should
be)? It was Middell. And no, haven't asked him. I think we should
stick with Werner or the women if somebody can tell me anything about
her.

I think it is a risk to invite Surmatz, if we don’t know enough of her. You haven't read her books or articles, Magnus?
If the speaker MUST be a woman, Antonella can probably advice us to find a good one.
Otherwise, let’s ask Werner asap.

Ok, I agree Surmatz is a bit of a risk, but then let's go ahead and ask Werner - then if he can't attend we can ask Surmatz.

Dear all,

Magnus and I have talked it over, and checked out Werner (again),
remembering that his one of the histoire croisée-people who have been
around for a while. So, how about somebody who has not been in the
EUI-syllabus for the last ten years? We have also checked out the
other people that have been suggested, and think we should invite
Jacob Vogel; http://histinst.phil-fak.uni-koeln.de/vogel.html?&L=14#c2727
Again, somebody who does Germany and France, but that almost seems
unavoidable. If he is not available, lets go for Werner, and if he
cannot, lets take Surmatz; http://home.medewerker.uva.nl/a.m.surmatz/.

And about Schmale:, http://www.univie.ac.at/Geschichte/htdocs2/site/arti.php/90194?
Is Vienna paying for him? Or are we? If we are paying, lets make him
the key-note speaker.

To sum up:
1. Schmale - if we are paying.
2. Vogel
3. Werner
4. Surmatz

We should decide this asap. How about if we decide by the 22. and send
out the invite on the 23.? I can send out the invite.

Very good,
you can be right about Werner. Thus, Vogel is fine for me. I suppose that Schmale is paid by Vienna, but I am not sure. Fredrik can confirm.

Dear all

I have just emailing with my external supervisor about transfer seminar that he is going to host, and I have been confirmed in my former notion that he would be a great addition to our conference. Therefore, would any of you object if I invited him as a keynote speaker, in addition to who ever we decide to invite? I will, of course, stress that it is highly unlikely that we will be able to pay him, but I think, he may be likely to attend anyway, given he has time.

Here are his details: http://www.hf.uio.no/ilos/english/people/aca/torere/index.html

Sorry for bringing this up again so late in the process, but I really think that it would be a good idea to invite him too as we are not too sure about any of the other candidates.

Ok, so we invite Schmale and Magnus' supervisor, Tore Rem. And perhaps
we should have somebody from EUI? Since we are hosting the event. And
Vogel? And are Ther coming? In that case, how many profs should we
invite? Checked at last years conference, they had four key note
speakers, http://graceh2010.wordpress.com/registration/program/. I
think that four is an absolute max for a two-day conference.

And happy christmas!

Dear all

Hope you all had a nice Christmas, and enjoyed the holidays. I have just received a mail from Tore Rem saying that he, unfortunately, does not have time to attend the conference - a shame, but we are rather late with the invitations.
Anyway, I am back in Firenze now, and as soon as more of you return (if you aren't already here) I think we should get together asap and talk about what needs to be done about the conference.

Since I never heard back about Vogel, I have not invited him. I can do
that asap if we you guys agree that we should invite him.

I have written to Schmale and invited him.

As for the meeting: I'll be back on 18th of Dec. Fredrik has some
problems with his eui-mail, but he will be in Florence between the
20th and 25th of January. Maybe we should try to get together sometime
during that time.

Did Schmale reply? Do you know already whether he is paid.
We have received already 5 applications. In addition, we got the following mail from Iran. What do you think?

"Dear Sirs
I am a petroleum engineer from Iran. I want to send copies of my papers for presentation in this conference. To which address I must send my paper abstracts? If someone's paper is chosen for presentation, do you give a complimentary registration and pay for travel and accommodation? Do you support financially the authors who their papers accepted for presentation? For example free accommodation, traveling, etc. Is it possible for me to be one of your keynote speakers?
With the best regards
Abdollah Esmaeili"

No, Schmale has not replied yet, but to be fair, I only sent the
invitation on Saturday morning. As for his pay: We are not really sure
yet, but as far as I got, he should not be paid since he is from a co-
organizing institution. According to Fredrik, EUI paid for all the EUI-
people last year. However, I'm not sure if this also applies to Profs.
It seems to be a reoccurring feature of academic life that well-funded
professors never pay for themselves. Daria, can you ask Antonella if
we are paying for Schmale on the dep.meeting on the 15th?

As for the strange e-mail. It seems that he has not understood how
academic conferences work. I think the same applies to him as for
everybody else attending; i.e., he will not be paid.
