In six weeks, we will know if Filipino voters will repudiate the election of members of political dynasties to senatorial and congressional offices and more than 17,000 provincial and municipal posts all over the country.
 
Before the country took a break from earthly concerns over the weekend, it got a foretaste of Easter. That was in the form of the Fitch Ratings raising the country’s credit rating to investment grade.
 
With the local campaign kicking off, the Commission on Elections has vowed to crack down on illegal posters and other materials displayed in areas not designated for campaign purposes by the poll body. The Comelec had earlier announced it was tapping social media to encourage citizens to report illegal campaign activities. Since then the poll body has been criticized for its underwhelming response to complaints, and for alleged bias when it comes to illegal campaign activities attributed to administration candidates.
 
The nine functions that the Constitution entrusts with the Comelec can be reduced to two basics: to adjudicate election cases, and to oversee all elections.
