Like some hideous creatures from outer space, political dynasties are multiplying in the Philippines in spite of a constitutional provision banning them. Even neophyte politicians like Manny Pacquiao, from whom one would expect better behavior, has started his own dynasty. At the same time that he is running for reelection as representative of Saranggani, he is fielding his wife, Jinkee, as a candidate for vice governor of the province, and his brother as a mayoral candidate. Next, he may field his mother, Mommy Dionisia, as a dancing candidate for governor.
 
The New People’s Army is reportedly contributing to the campaign kitties of certain candidates. The story is not surprising; similar stories have circulated in previous elections, with left-leaning candidates said to be the principal beneficiaries. That is where the “revolutionary taxes” and permit-to-campaign fees extorted by the NPA supposedly go.
 
With the start of the campaign period of candidates for local government positions, the 2013 election campaign is now in full swing. But foremost in the minds of everybody is still the reason or purpose for fixing a campaign period.
