Because we need to expand democracy, not shrink it, we are very much on board with Free DC. We need more democracy for more  Americans.

A message from our founders at No Kings

Jonathan —

This president very much wants to silence protest and dissent. We saw him try to do that this week, when he and his allies lied about this very event today, No Kings, trying to get us all to stay home.

Our right to protest is important everywhere — but it is especially important in the capital. Authoritarian leaders throughout history have tried to control and restrict people in the capital because they know that controlling the capital is a way to control the nation, and a way to prevent the transfer of power. We saw that on January 6.

We are in our third month of military occupation by armed forces from other states and by gangs of federal agents who are attacking our communities. They have attacked our unhoused neighbors, our immigrant neighbors, our Black and Brown neighbors, our cultural institutions, and the thousands of people here who serve as federal workers.

Here in DC, they have tried to take over our local police department. They have put a disgraced Fox News host, Jeanine Pirro, in charge of local prosecutions, and their allies in Congress are now trying to pass more than a dozen bills and two dozen budget riders all aimed at taking away basic rights from people in the capital of this country.

This president has tried to instill fear among people — but we know better.

The people of DC are joyful AND powerful. We know we have what it takes to not just resist this tyrant but to actively take him out of power. This is not just about voting. This is not just about attending rallies. We have to organize right now like our lives depend on it.

We can’t afford to wait three more years for the next presidential election. We need to build the power we need NOW. When we act collectively, we have more power than we realize. As part of today’s event, we’re hosting Action Tents to help us all understand how to use collective power:

  • We have power as jurors. Indictments are failing because people like us recognize that this administration’s charges are unjust.
  • We have power as taxpayers. We are all collectively funding this administration, and we have the power to slow that down.
  • We have power as consumers. We can choose to either fuel the companies that are profiting off our oppression, or we can starve those companies.
  • We have power as workers. If you’re not in a union, get in an union. Talk to your coworkers about collective action.
  • And we have power as community members, who can engage in our sacred duty to protect one another, support one another in solidarity, and reject this administration’s cruelty agenda.

Over the last ten months we have seen clearly that every single time they attack us, If we respond immediately, we grow stronger. We are building the unity and power it will take to demand and secure full power over our local money, our DC National Guard, and all our local laws. Ultimately, that means we need DC to be admitted as the 51st State. Our entire national democracy will always be at risk until that happens.

That means that everyone across this country needs a Free DC. From Ward 1 to Ward 8, and from Los Angeles to Chicago, and from Memphis to Portland—we are united!

In partnership,

Free DC
