You may have heard: the federal government is planning to remove part of the protected bike lane on 15th Street in Washington, through the National Mall, which is a vital artery for the region, not only the city.
This lane, like all bike lanes, made this street safer and better for everyone. It reduced injuries for all crashes and cut travel times for drivers, too.
The data is unambiguous. But data alone doesn't protect infrastructure, people do.
WABA is leading the fight here in DC, and the League knows this is a threat every community could face in the coming years.
It's also indicative of the type of thinking at the highest levels of our government, the same people who want to shape the next transportation bill and the next five years of federal transportation funding.
Tomorrow, we wrap up the National Bike Summit and we take our message to the National Mall: Bike Lanes Save Lives!
Come out and join us in solidarity with WABA, with bicyclists in DC, and with everyone who believes in safer roads for all.
