We LOVE GQueues and are using it for our startup company. The one
thing that is missing for us is time tracking - we use a lot of
consultants and contract employees and need a system for them to track
their hours in. If this could be done for each task and rolled up so
the admin accounts can view the info it would awesome!
Thanks.

Not sure if its quite what you're looking for, but I use a 3rd party app called GTimeReport with my Google Calendars. (I've not tested it with GQs calendar integration though, just in my own 5# calendars.)
www.gtimereport.com

It does require methodical consistency with the event titles, but it is simple & well considered. Ideally Google would implement something like this directly into GCal.

Otherwise, I can imagine this being an element of an analysis section for GQs.

I do have time tracking on my list of features to add, but right now it's not as high a priority as some other improvements, so it will probably be awhile before this gets implemented.

You should try this one http://www.ilovefreesoftware.com/04/windows/business/download-time-doctor-free.html
It's the most reliable and user friendly employee time tracking
software I have ever tried and I've been using it for 2 years and
counting. It has a web based client that can be access by manager from
anywhere.

Cheers!

Hi Cameron,

+1 vote for this feature request which really would make GQueues a great project management tool in addition to handling tasks. Any timeline for this development?

+1 on duration

Aside from the lack of a native mobile app, it's the main reason our company is still using RTM instead of GQueues. I love GQueues but it really needs this feature.

I'm less worried about time tracking but very interested in resource estimating.  We use Pivotal Tracker for managing software projects; as you flesh out stories, you put in estimated durations.  It can then add them up and let you see what you can fit into, say, a week.  I don't think GQueues needs to go so far, but if you could put in an estimated duration for a task, and have a default, and see a total at the top of a queue or a subtask, it would be a huge help in trying to be rational about what can be done in a busy day or week.

Also plus 1 for time tracking. It would be great to track Estimate, and Actual. Really just the ability to add numeric values, that can be totaled  over all subtasks, and for an entire queue/result set.

Back in 2011 Cameron said it was on the list but would be awhile. So Cam, has it been awhile yet? I use Toggl for time now but if GQ could do it I'd pretty much have my utopial time management tool.

Haha! Yes, David, I suppose it's been awhile.  Time tracking is still on the list of improvements to make.  Many other features have taken higher priority since this was originally suggested.  I don't have this work scheduled yet, so I can't give any estimates on when it might be added.  I realize it would be really useful to have - it's just a matter of prioritizing against everything else.  Here's what's coming next:

Hi Cameron, I've been watching GQueues for sometime now, and I've been waiting for the time tracking. You talked about it back in 2011, but I still do not see any time tracking feature in there. So I thought I'd put my two cents in.

This really should be a priority as it's a necessity for us entrepreneurs, freelancers, or small business owners working with small teams - especially the ones that work virtually.

The time tracker should be a start / stop timer feature that can also be manually adjusted or added just in case of error or forgetfulness.

It should track as close as possible to actual time spent.

And it should allow for the owner / project manager / admin (not sure if GQueues as roles), but on some level the time should be able to be added for other users by this type of role.

And it would need really decent time reports. Whether that be a Google spreadsheet or what have you it would need something can be sorted in a variety of ways by lists, tags, etc.

All in all it looks like a very promising project management tool, and I have been watching it but I will not buy it until it has a decent time tracking as it's a MUST Have for my business.

The reason I've been watching it so closely is because it integrates with gmail and google calendar and it has a nice easy to use layout, but I'm waiting on that time tracking. Where are you with that? Have you given it up?

Thanks,
Rhonda

I'd be interested to know how everyone else is time tracking?

Having reliable analytics on (typically) how long repeating tasks/projects take should allow one to optimally plan days/weeks/months

Yours hopefully

Using Toggl's API might be the quickest way to integrate time tracking into Gqueues. Not sure if Gqueues would be open to that sort of thing though.

Hi Michael and David,

I apologize for the delayed response, but I wanted to let you know that we recently discovered an integration between Clockify and GQueues. We're still considering an internal time-tracking functionality in the future, but I encourage you to check out Clockify in the meantime. You can find more information and add their Chrome extension at the link below.

The integration works like this: once you install the Clockify browser extension, log in and then go to your GQueues account. When you log in, you'll be able to see the Clockify button in GQueues and when you click on it, the timer will start ticking with your GQueues's task name as a description of your entry as shown in the screenshot below.

I hope this helps!

All the best,
Stacie

Hi Stacie -

Thanks so much for sharing this. Although it's a bit of an ad-hoc integration, it definitely is something.

In case anyone's interested, here's how I have been doing it manually, but directly within Gqueues itself using AutoHotkey and Clipper+:

In the notes of a task, I'll enter in a start date / time with a description of the effort I am tracking, like so:

2019-10-27 13:05:51 _to_ 2019-10-27 13:09:53 - responding to Stacie about Clockify
2019-10-27 13:10:24 _to - writing about my workaround for tracking time directly in Gqueues

Then, when I search for "_to", it just returns the active task(s) being tracked
If I search for "_to_", it just returns the tasks with completed effort.

Thankfully, underscores are treated as searchable characters within Gqueues, which makes it possible to do some creative things like this.

I use an autohotkey script to insert the current date time on my PC, then Clipper+ on my android to do the same thing. The main downside is having to make sure I don't have more than one task active at once (clockify on the other hand handles that automatically, but stopping the timer on a task when you start it on another)

It's a bit of extra effort, but the benefit is that the effort (time spent on a task) is contained within Gqueues itself and thus accurate, up-to-date reports / invoices can be constructed with the full and latest context of the task (description, tags, parent tasks, etc...)

For those interested, the snippet needed for autohotkey is as follows:

; CURRENT DATETIME START GQUEUES
:R*?:dtq::
FormatTime, CurrentDateTime,, yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss
SendInput %CurrentDateTime%
SendInput {Space}_to
return

; CURRENT DATETIME END GQUEUES
:R*?:dtp::
FormatTime, CurrentDateTime,, yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss
SendInput _{Space}
SendInput %CurrentDateTime%
return

And for Clipper+ on android it is:

%YEAR%-%MONTH_ZERO%-%DAY_ZERO% %HOUR%:%MINUTES%:%SECONDS% _to -

_
%YEAR%-%MONTH_ZERO%-%DAY_ZERO% %HOUR%:%MINUTES%:%SECONDS%

If I track effort in the notes of the task, then it's just a matter of exporting or copying-pasting tasks from Gqueues into a spreadsheet and writing formulas to get time reports for say a supervisor or for billing a client.

Honestly though, until Gqueues integrates time tracking or a third-party provides a robust integration, I wouldn't bother tracking time unless I have to.
