Hello,
I've installed GQRX on a crouton chroot on my chromebook. I had some success getting it to pick up some 445 MHz frequencies, but after power washing the chromeos and doing a fresh install of stretch and gqrx, compiling the osmocom drivers from github, I get full spectrum static. I can't pick up local FM stations even. Plus, the slider for LNA gain is stuck. I have a spike on the center frequency on the waterfall, but the spike stays centered no matter what frequency I tune to. I did a fresh install of Raspian on my Pi thinking that it was because my chrombook (Acer CB3-431) only has USB, that was the problem. I have GQRX running gqrx for the raspberry pi and copying all the *.rules files, and I'm getting the exact same result there. I'm using the RTL-SDR kit with the telescoping dipole.
I believe I may have smoke the receiver, but wanted to check here first. Any ideas? Someone will probably give a super simple head banging solution and I'll feel silly. Thank you for your help. Sorry for being a NOOB.

Christopher,

these notes on testing with an RTL-SDR dongle may help:
