After successfully using my RTL-SDR.com dongle with gqrx on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ I decided to also try it out on my Tinker Board running Tinker OS. (Tinker OS is based on Linaro, which in turn based on Debian Stretch, the same base that Raspbian is built on.) The Tinker Board is a sort-of Pi clone featuring the Rockchip RK3288 SoC; it duplicates the board dimensions and connector layout of the RPi 3B.

I am happy to report that it Just Worked, following the same instructions as for the Pi. Installation of the software was much faster (the Tinker Board has a faster processor, more RAM, and faster WiFi), and I could run at the full 2.4 Mbps sample rate with no hiccups.

Do you think you  could just install a Raspberry Pi image direct to it rather than use Tinker OS ?

Neil,

probably not, at least not without a great exploration of one's knowledge of cuss words. Raspbian has adaptations specific to the Raspberry Pi hardware, and one suspects that the same is true of Tinker OS.

With x86 hardware, these sorts of issues have essentially been designed/implemented out over a long period of time, though they remain with some hardware that is not as open as it might be, typically multi-protocol Wi-Fi/Bluetooth adapters. For the Raspberry Pi, for instance, parts of the SoC are still required to use non-open source drivers.

HTH,

Robin, G8DQX

Yes, I see
Did a google search on it too after posting.. should have done that before.

Think I’ll just go with and Odroid XU4, or the new one... can’t think of it’s name
