Waterfall nothing but blue static

I'm on Ubuntu 14.04 trying to install the latest version of gqrx. I have an RTL-SDR dongle that I'd like to use with it, but when I open gqrx and set the default settings for the RTL-SDR dongle, all I hear is static no matter what frequency I'm on. The entire waterfall view is all blue and it's just random noise. I know the dongle works because I have tested it using rtl_fm and aplay and that works perfectly fine. Can anyone help me get some sound of of this?

Hi Nathan,

Can you clarify whether you see a "flat blue" waterfall and you hear
nothing or if is there actually some noise? Perhaps a screenshot :)

If you get noise then perhaps it is just some RF gain settings that
need to be adjusted. Se under input device settings in the upper right
area. I'm thinking it could be this issue you experience:

Thanks very much, enabling hardware AGC solved the problem!
