Hi John,

I can not help you with Ubuntu 12.04 no matter how many times you ask. Sorry.

If you install Ubuntu 14.04 you can use our packages from the PPA, but
I don't have the resources to also create packages for Ubuntu 12.04

I meant create new, updated packages in addition to the ones that we
already have in the PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~gqrx/+archive/ubuntu/snapshots/

Hi Alex,  Thanks for your reply.  Sorry to bother you for this basic request.  I can switch to 14.04 no problem at all.  I only need to know about the install procedure once the tar file is uncompressed.    I have tried to install GQRX via pybombs as Corgan Labs showed a functioning GQRX in a recent course for GNUradio.  However I have had no success with pybombs and GQRX thats why I tried the tar file this time instead.  Is there a procedure that can help me understand the PPA?
Thanks,
John

John,

Installing via pybombs and tar.gz is a long and complicated process
used by developers and experienced users. It's not something I'd
recommend for anyone who is new in linux. I don't mind that you ask; I
just get upset when linux newbies are advised to install gqrx from
source when there are binary packages available.

A PPA is a "Personal Package Archive" and contains binary packages
that can be installed conveniently using the Ubuntu Software Center.
All you have to do is add the PPA to the list of repositories.

How to install from the PPA is explained on the PPA page under "Read
about installing" but here is the short version:

Open a terminal and type:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gqrx/releases
sudo apt-get update

When done you should find gqrx 2.3.1 in the software center (Ubuntu
14.04; 12.04 will have an old not recommended version).

There is also the option of trying a live DVD:
http://gnuradio.org/redmine/projects/gnuradio/wiki/GNURadioLiveDVD

Don't know if it gives you the option to install, but at least you can try it.
