I would like to listen to the radio:
$ lsusb -d0bda:2838
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0bda:2838 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL2838 DVB-T

The dongle can be found:
$ rtl_test
Found 1 device(s):

0:  Realtek, RTL2838UHIDIR, SN: 00000001

Using device 0: Generic RTL2832U OEM
Found Rafael Micro R820T tuner
Supported gain values (29): 0.0 0.9 1.4 2.7 3.7 7.7 8.7 12.5 14.4 15.7 16.6 19.7 20.7 22.9 25.4 28.0 29.7 32.8 33.8 36.4 37.2 38.6 40.2 42.1 43.4 43.9 44.5 48.0 49.6
Sampling at 2048000 S/s.

Info: This tool will continuously read from the device, and report if

get lost. If you observe no further output, everything is fine.

, in the Configure I'O devices box, Realtek, RTL2838UHIDIR not a listed device, just Complex Sampled and Other.

Why is my Realtek, RTL2838UHIDIR not a listed device?

Have you blacklisted the device so that the drivers built in to the kernel are not used?

Even with no devices detected you should normally see:

RFSPACE SDR-IQ
RFSPACE SDR-IP
RFSPACE NetSDR
RTLSDR server
Complex sampled (IQ) file
Other...

I don't know because I have no idea how you installed gqrx and
gr-osmosdr, but if I am to take a wild guess, I would say that the
gr-osmosdr driver library was compled without support for rtlsdr.

Bingo.  Very clever to deduce that one.

The solution was to add rtlsdr support to gr-osmosdr.

I'm getting this same exact error. Trying to decipher this thread for the fix but I'm not clear on how "exactly" to fix this problem. Not totally new to this. Been pulling my hair out for going on a month now. HaHa. Virtual Box / Linux Mint (Rebecca). Used PyBombs to install GNURadio. So I know I have a pretty clean install. Just issues with losing bytes during the rtl_test run utility. Windows SDR# and other windows versions of SDR run great. So anyway.....my brain is fried from trying to get gqrx running correctly and I sure would appreciate a more detailed explanation of how to get it running correctly

RTLSDR I want GQRX to perform smoothly. Virtual Box / Linux Mint / PyBombs installation of GNURadio. Running gqrx now I get errors of losing bytes from the USB.

A__gtk_widget_get_direction: assertion 'GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed

That's One line of error code
Running rtl_test I get a bunch of lost bytes scrolling. Audio is incredibly choppy and barely readable at all sample rates.

I have tried and gotten similar results using Windows7 in two different virtual machine environments. My research indicates that VMEs don’t do a very good job of USB port/host emulation. The exact same hardware had NO problem handling full sampling input from the same device in a true Win/Intel installation.
