GQRX nd Ubuntu 18.05

Someone has probably already asked this but....

I accidentally blew away my Ubuntu - 16.04 installation of GQRX so that ship has sailed.

I brought up a new Ubuntu 18.04 system with all the same hardware. RTL_SDR is installed and tested (rtl_test) and is working. The system was updated and upgraded so GQRX installed without a lot of fuss. The blacklist entry is done. However..

When I run the program, I get the update-the-configuration screen and set up the input device and audio out feed. Once set, the display screen comes up. I set the frequency I need and start the receiver. Then nothing. The screen is there but no receive. If I try some other settings the system will eventually freeze and I have to kill the instance.

Anyone have any hints to guide me through this?
