accuracy: something I don't understand

Hi,

I have recently tested two phones, with apparently significant differences in API LEVEL, DUAL FREQUENCY capabilities, etc. (see below). I don't see significant differences is Accuracy - the only significant difference being the TTFF.

Tests were run in the same place (city), GNSS on for both in "Developer settings", accuracy was around 5-6 meters for both.

What am I missing? Or what is missing from the app?

The app uses satellites to validate your location when taking photos, in android can use OSNMA

I have tested all my phones with EGNSS4ALL, for now (until PIC2BIM becomes available) here.

Now back to my initial question: please have a look at these three phones, and tell me how is it possible that the apparently most capable one has the lowest accuracy???

The accuracy tests were done in the exact same spot, all within 5 minutes, open sky (no clouds, no tree canopies). Shouldn't dual-frequency capability bring about a much better result?

In life, 'basic' can perform just as well, sometimes better; one doesn't always get what one pays for.

That aside, perhaps your question is best asked of the manufacturer .   

Put the challenge/question to them , as to why your 'best' phone does not perform as you expect in your tests.

Unless you are inferring and then questioning if something is wrong with GPPSTest, in which case ... carry on here

Hi,

I don't think that something's wrong with GPSTest. The app checks phone capabilities, and provides a good means of checking/comparing accuracy of different phones - and it does these very well.

To me - and for now - it looks like these capabilities are not clearly reflected in the accuracy, however. At least, not constantly. Maybe there are other capabilities and factors, that have more influence on the accuracy than dual-frequency, for example.

Anyway... this is what I can do.

Testing, sharing the results, and asking questions.

Hello thanks for providing the results, I only have 2 android devices to test pic2bim, and found the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active3 (Model: SM-T575) is a reliable to about 2-3m in accuracy when taking geotagged photos (single frequency), but Samsung Galaxy Tab Active4 Pro 5G (Model: SM-T636B) accuracy normally about 1-2m.(dual frequency NO OSNMA support currently)

 

Would be good if you could take a photo with pic2bim with OSNMA Validation setting ON set Point Capture Period to 5 seconds,

then could update the table below to validate the device can process raw GNSS measurements

Still waiting for PIC2BIM to show up in Google Play. In the meantime, I took a photo for you in EGNSS4ALL.

This is the Xiaomi 13T device. I'll do this with my other phones when the new app becomes available in Google Play.

PIC2BIM still not showing up in search results, on Google Play, so I thought maybe you still get some useful data from ol' EGNSS4ALL. I have tested the Armor X10 Pro, photo "Sent".

Phil, I could test all three devices today, since I got access to the latest PIC2BIM app. But we have a cloudy day today, in Budapest. Is that ok,or should I wait for a blue sky?

No problem, carried out some testing on Friday , was quite cloudy in Alton UK (Accuracy 10.31) from iPhone 13

- 72.jpg & 73.jpg: Xiaomi 13T

(I have also "Sent" the photos from the app)

Was wondering how long it took approximately to validate a satellite (Galileo E1b) as sometimes it takes quite a while in southeast England

For the Redmi 12C and the Armor X10, it took a couple of minutes (less than 3 min. for sure), even though there were no buildings nearby. The 13T got it significantly faster (less than 1 min. for sure). I might be able to measure this next time when I get out from the "concrete jungle".
