I've been looking for (Android) dual frequency tablets; the L1/L5 type of dual frequency, not the L1/L2 variety. Trying to determine the GNSS capabilities for any given tablet has become somewhat of a taboo subject. Apparently this is but a sub-taboo subject of the larger taboo subject of Android tablets generally, leaving some to declare: You should not be buying an Android tablet in 2020. Period. Maybe JR Raphael has a point.

The apparent schism between mobile device OSes (phone v. tablet), has me wondering: Where does the Android location code that Frank van Diggelen so passionately champions fit in to the Chrome OS landscape? Maybe it's a non-issue, and all Android apps run fine on chromeOS?

Regardless of the operating system, finding the hardware (receiver chipset and antenna) on the tablet that will support L1/L5 type dual frequency solutions remains a daunting task. Are any GPSTest users aware of tablets supporting dual frequency?

Not according to the GPSTest Database linked from here https://groups.google.com/g/gpstest_android/c/9DyyB3MAFns
What type of project did you need one for ?

The only tablets listed that I saw indicate they don't support dual frequency. It's quite possible; however, that I messed up in trying to discern tablets apart from phones. Which explicit listed devices are there on this list that are tablets supporting dual frequency?

I buy ONLY tablets BTW, smartphones too small for me. Indeed VoLTE is removed by Samsung, starting from Tab s3. And dual frequency I think too, but there is this. https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/tablets/dual-frequency-gnss-for-gps-and-gallileo-not-working-on-tab-s6/m-p/2693140/emcs_t/S2h8ZW1haWx8bWVudGlvbl9zdWJzY3JpcHRpb258S0tBVkkzRlQyTVNROUh8MjY5MzE0MHxBVF9NRU5USU9OU3xoSw#M7035

Hi Val,

Thanks for the link to their (apparently ignored) request to Samsung to enable L1/L5 on their Tab S6 tablet.

Do you know of any tablets that support L1/L5?

Kind regards,

Kelly

That is the point. Tab S6 must support it, since it has Snapdragon 855 (even for Europe).

Hello Val,

Thank you for your reply.

Sorry, I meant do you know of any tablets that are currently supporting L/L5, not whether their chipset conceivably could maybe sometime possibly support dual frequency should the OEM ever decide to allow it.

Thank you for any links to the OEM's product page(s).

Kind regards,

Kelly

Sounds like the Tab S6 may be another example of a device with an L5-capable chipset but lacking radio and RF frontend to actually use the signals. I talk a bit about this here:

I wouldn't hold my breath for them to implement L5 support after the fact as it seems to be a hardware limitation.

It is not up to OEM. Qualcomm are fully in control. Samsung cannot really do anything besides on software level, just like they did for VoLTE, turning it off in build.prop and in snapdragon modem firmware flags. You can turn it on though. Same about dual freq. GNSS, I am sure. There is also a way to activate in dev menu described there... Maybe it can work, I dunno.

Also to the other guy who answered, but there is no message here on google groups(?), you may not know that, but it is not 1 antanna vs 2 antennas that defined dual frequency. Tablets and smartphones do not really have antennas in a classical sence. They have insane phased arrays smart antennas... That are used for 5G, for example, but also for 2x2:2 Wifi and CA for LTE.
