Data discrepancies from GPSTest database data or from the vendor?

Hi all,

I was reading these articles about Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset and Trimble RTX service:
1) https://www.qualcomm.com/news/releases/2022/03/qualcomm-and-trimble-introduce-meter-level-location-accuracy-smartphones
2) https://www.qualcomm.com/news/releases/2023/04/qualcomm-and-xiaomi-demonstrated-mobile-meter-level-positioning-

So, I checked on the GPSTest Database about some entries on Xiaomi 12T. I found 3 records about Xiaomi 12T and 3 entries about Xiaomi 12T Pro. I was looking at some data and trying to inspect their meaning according to the smartphone specs (attached) and some insights about GPSTest data (https://barbeau.medium.com/crowdsourcing-gnss-capabilities-of-android-devices-d4228645cf25).

I was wondering, first of all, if the data in "GNSS hardware year" column are correct. All the smartphones have been released between July and October 2022 (see the specs attached), so how the GNSS HW year could be 2018 or 2020?

I've also seen that the "Carrier Phase" column data seem to show that carrier phase measurements are not supported on 12T Pro. I was wondering (please corect me) if this is possible even if the smartphone supports the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip (and hence the Trimble RTX service). The two things could be correlated? Moreover, the Trimble RTX service is something that comes automatically within the chip or has to be activated/allowed in a certain way?
I've also seen that for 12T Pro records the "Android build number" seem to be updated (2022/2023). I was wondering if an OS update could allow the recording of carrier phase measurements on the 12T Pro model, as it may be happened for dual-frequency data (as described in Sean article about the "GNSS Hardware model name").

Thank you all

Marco

Marco,

> I was wondering, first of all, if the data in "GNSS hardware year" column are correct.

From what I've seen it's not uncommon for devices to ship with GNSS hardware that is several years older than the chipset itself.

That being said, IIRC there seems to be a bug in the S23 series devices where the hardware year is reporting to be older in the S22 series.

So if a number doesn't seem right, I would encourage you to reach out to the device manufacturer and ask.

Yes, it's possible for the GSS hardware to support carrier phase but NOT expose this information to developers via the Android raw measurements API. A while back I looked at the GPSTest Database and I couldn't find a single instance of a qcom-based device supporting carrier phase in the raw measurements API.

Again, I would encourage you to reach out to the device manufacturer and the chipset manufacture if you would like to see carrier phase exposed to developers on these devices.

Sorry to have to reply here, but I am still unable to write a new posting on GPSTest using my smartphone.  I read a few weeks ago that there is a bug, affecting some groups, that appears.

In the last few days, I have begun an effort to solicit people entering the GPS data from their phones.  I repost this to 25 new people each day on Quora.

"Can you help collect smartphone GPS features database? Appstore GPSTest (no space), Run it. Wait 5 minutes to collect satellite data. Click 'three bars'. Click 'Accuracy' Click 'share'. Click 'device'. See first Answer for database you helped add"

Hey Jim,
Thanks for asking people to contribute to the database!

For a long time I haven't been able to write a new post from the mobile web interface either. The workaround I use is to either post from a laptop, or on your mobile device inside of your browser choose the option for "Desktop site". Then it should give you a button to create a new thread.

Oops, I did it again!

I just placed the following text on more than a dozen Facebook groups devoted to smartphones. I hope I did not make any errors.

I also continue to enter this inquiry into the Quora system, so about 25 requests each day.

But I think I've dramatically increased the rate of requests by this latest Facebook upload.

Can you tell me if you have noticed any increase in database upload rates in the last few days?;;

"Can you help collect smartphone GPS features database? Appstore GPSTest (no space), Run it. Wait 5 minutes to collect satellite data. Click 'three bars'. Click 'Accuracy' Click 'share'. Click 'device'.

"This growing database contains data added (easily) by smartphone users, by running free app GPSTest (no space; confusingly, there is a different app ‘GPS Test').

"GPSTest Database
Devices Manufacturer,Model,Name,Android version,API level,GNSS hardware year,GNSS hardware model name,Dual-frequency,Supported GNSS,GNSS CFs,Supported SBAS,SBAS CFs,Raw measurements,Carrier phase (getAccumulatedDeltaRangeMeters()),Navigation messages,NMEA,Inject Predicted Satellite Data Service ...
Do that, and the specific phone GPS info is automatically added to the database.

Run it. Wait 5 minutes to collect satellite data. Click 'three bars'. Click 'Accuracy' Click 'share'. Click 'device'.

This database grows as people use GPSTest to enter data from phones. No personal data is shared. If you have older (retired) smartphones, you can reactivate them and use WiFi to upload. (No phone service is needed)

The only data I have is what's in the public Google Sheet. You could calculate the upload rate based on the time column - I'll see if I have time (pun intended) to do this in the next few days.
