Forgive my humble question from the peanut gallery:
I picked up an unlocked LG V20 to replace my ancient GalaxyS4. (Originally because I'm waiting for the X55 modem before buying something new; now maybe I'll add dual-frequency GPS to my desired-feature list?)
I live on the west coast, up on a small hill. To my surprise the V20 can see a GNSS satellite marked as Japan #195. (I think this is QZS-4?)
The signal can be very strong. BUT, even after waiting a long time (an hour?) the GPSTest program never reported A, E, or U status for this satellite. AND, Elev and Az are both blank.
This unit is running old 8.0 Android, and there are no OTA patches available. Whatever firmware/OS I'm running is apparently all that VZW will give to me. Unit is not rooted.
(I just did a quick screen cap. It just illustrates the signal strength. I only let it run a minute or so. ALSO, note US Navstar #18. I see this without any info too. But there are Air Force notices about retirement/reissue/outages regarding PRN-18, so maybe this is expected. But the literature suggests that QVS-4 (#195) is operational. So I expected to see some info listed in the test program.)
Am I not seeing info for Japan #195 because the GPS chip or firmware/software in this old LG V20 is inept?
Is anyone else seeing proper data reported for Japan #195?
(I have no other comparison devices. The even older Galaxy S4 doesn't display anything beyond Navstar and Glonass.)
For what it is worth, when I was recently in Peru, the V20 did see actual signal from the BeiDou satellites. I don't think I ever saw E or U status for them though.

I see a Japan QZS satellite with very good signal. It is listed as number 195.
BUT, it has no almanac data, no ephemeris entry, no elev/azm info, and as far as I have seen, is never listed with a "U" (so I assume is not being used for positioning).
Is this normal, or is the GPS chip in this old LG phone too inept to properly receive their almanac and use the japanese qzs satellite?
Thank you for your help.
