Hi,
a friend sent me a file with the extension kml though I can't upload
it to gpsfly:

There is a free product called GPSbabel that can convert between about 130 different file formats.
It is a DOS-type product, so you will also need GPSbable GUI as a "front end" to drive it.
It also handles uploads and downloads to GPS units via USB.
