I have a Samsung S7 running Android 7.0. I cannot find a way to export waypoints (.kml) files.

When I try Gmail (via export in dropdown from Waypoints) I get the message "Permission denied for the attachment" and the resulting email is empty.

When I try Google Drive (from the export dropdown) I fill out the Save to Drive form and specify My Drive, I get the message "Exporting one element" but subsequently I get the notification that "Upload was unsuccessful Unable to schedule 1 file for upload"

My device is synched to my Windows computer, Google Drive (and Docs) are all working, and I have renewed my certificate through Mapfinity (?).

Never tried that myself so can't offer direct help.

However I do routinely export KML to the local file system so I know that works. Maybe as a workaround, assuming nobody has a real solution, you can export to the local file system then use Gmail to add it as an attachment. Probably could also move/copy it from the file system to Google Drive using the Drive app.

I apologize for being largely uninformed about smartphones, but I have no idea how to 'export to the local file system' from within Waypoints>Export. Further, my local file system appears to be what is under the Folders app, but it has no folder I recognize as GPS Essentials.

Your approach should work if I can get a handle on the file.

I might be able to use WiFi Direct (another Export option) but my phone won't see my Windows 10 computer and I can't figure out how to activate WiFi Direct on the computer.

Perhaps try exporting under tracks and hopefully it will include your waypoints.

I routinely export data from tracks to both gmail and G drive. Hope it helps your situation too.

On the initial export screen you press the arrow to the right of the directory path/filename. On my phones, the directory path/filename defaults to /storage/emulated/0/Download/Waypoints which creates a file named Waypoints.kml in the directory named /storage/emulated/0/Download. You should then see the file in the Folders app. To send by Gmail you click the paperclip icon, choose Attach file which should open a file chooser dialog in the Download directory so you can choose the Waypoints.kml and email it.

Thanks. But I do not have tracks, only individual waypoints related to observations of plants, animals, etc.

Your suggest is an excellent one. Unfortunately the app wants to write the file to an SD card, and I do not have one installed. The app used to write to the phone's internal storage and the file would appear there.

The failure to export using Gmail or Google Drive seems to be a bug. My phone recognizes all my laptop's Drive folders and files, so I am synched, but export always fails.

On the export screen tap the little SD card icon and you'll get a standard Android file/directory chooser dialog that you can use to change the location to where the Download directory is on your phone. I strongly recommend using the standard android Download or Documents directory because those two are accessible to all Android apps that I've ever tried. You can also change the filename in the dialog if you want.

FYI, I verified the non-functioning of GMail/GDrive export on my main phone. This broken feature is almost certainly one that worked years ago when GPSe was written and no longer works due to Google restricting an apps ability to access the file system in Android. Google has been changing the access rights to the file system for years to increase security, following the example of Apple's iOS but not as restrictive.

Can you guys tell me which version of Android you are using? I just tried sharing and it works for me with both GMail and Google Drive, even when the "Write to External Storage" permission is off.

Doh! I should have remembered to mention it.

It was on 8.1 with the July update, basically the most recent version around (via Google Fi).

Sorry. The details are in the message chain in your user forum. I am running Android 7.0 on a Samsung S7 Galaxy.

Can I find a link to the most recent documentation on the website. Thank you

OK, feeling increasingly stupid here. Android 7 seems different from your Android 8. When I select the sdcard icon, I get only three choices - <root>, sdcard, gps essential kml files. Selecting the last tells me that this folder is not readable, or does not exist. I do NOT get access to My Folders where the document and download folders exist. In the app's settings there is a Storage Location option which gives me three choices, Internal Storage, and two other SDCard options. Selecting internal storage gives me access to a download directory from the waypoints/export/sdcard icon  but the app fails to write to it, presumably because it's looking for the file to be downloaded on the sdcard.

Rather than continuing to go through these gyrations and relying on manipulating folders and files, it would be far simpler to make the export items, at least Gmail and Drive, work from the native app as the former used to. They apparently work for Michael on the configurations he is using. Can they be made to work on our ancient systems?

Early next week I am participating in a local Land Trust docent training. I would love to be able to show off GPS Essentials, but I may be forced to find another app if I cannot get this to work for people who are even less knowledgeable than I am.

Thank you for your continung patience..

Can you go to System settings/Apps/GPS Essentials/Permissions and tell me which ones are enabled/disabled for you, please?

The storage location in GPS Essentials is the place where GPS Essentials puts all of its data, including attachments. Might be that it is only working with external storage and the storage permission enabled on Nougat.

Hi Dennis, on my Galaxy S6 running Android 7, the real root directory has an 'sdcard' folder which contains the 'user space' folders.  The name is misleading, since the S6 does not support external media.  On my phone, GPS Essentials defaults to the root of  'sdcard', but you can select another folder within 'sdcard'.  I do not see a way to create a new folder specific to GPS Essentials exports from within GPS Essentials - you could create that folder via My Files.

What happens if you launch Gmail on your phone, create an email and attach a file?  Can you share a file from your phone via Drive?  I recently upgraded from a phone running Android 5 - I noticed that Android 7 requests a lot of permissions when applications first need the permissions rather than during install time.  I recall Gmail and Drive asked for access to the file system when I first used them.  As Michael described for GPS Essentials, you can check permissions through Settings -> Apps -> (Gmail or Drive) -> Permissions.  You should get a screen where you can check and enable individual permissions.  I attached a screenshot although I am not sure if Google Groups will post it.
        Regards, Norbert

Thanks for your reply. But I can't get a file saved to Drive or My Files, so no way to attach to email. As you noted Show 'SDCard' shows a file for GS Essentials, but it is empty.

Time to fix the bug, I've spent too much time on this already.

I have Samsung S7 Android 8.0.0 and GPS Essentials.4.4.24.
I have just checked that a waypoint (I mean just a point, created in Waypoints menu) is immediately exported to Google Drive with no difficulty.
As far as tracks are concerned, I can export any tracks recorded (tracks menu) exactely as easily. When track is open, I select export in the thre dots menu, select the format, then select Google drive in the icones, and there it is.
I can try and make a video for you if necessary.

I have the same problem.
I took pictures and waypoints when "internal storage" was selected. I can´t export to Drive either e-mail the files. The notification when I try to export to Drive is that "Upload was unsuccessfully unable to schedule 1 file for upload".

When I changed to "external app storage", pictures and waypoints disappeared. So, my question is: how to export photos, waypoints, and tracks from the app, storaged on "internal storage" to my computer?

Now on I changed to "external app storage" and I don´t have this problem anymore :)

Thanks!

Hi, an update here!

I´ve just update the app and I could export all files, even into "internal storage" mode :)

I've changed to "external app storage" on Settings and selected option "none" into Geocoder (on Settings too). In the "Pictures" I can see the name of the photo on the photo (for exemple GPSe-180816-173619.jpg) and when I share to Drive, the photo is named by GPSe-0.jpg. I attached exemples.

How can I choose this name: GPSe-180816-173619.jpg to name the photos, instead GPSe-0.jpg?

Thanks!
