I use Google MyMaps to plan trips and export KMZ files which I could then directly import into GPS Essentials.  With GPSE 4.4.64, icons would display properly.  However, recently they are showing as red Xs.  I believe the problem started when I upgraded from 4.4.64 to 4.5.15.  Previously imported KMZ files display properly, so I suspect it is an issue with the import step.  I have attached a sample KMZ file (Port Canaveral.kmz) .

I was able to recreate the problem on a device that was still on 4.4.64.  I successfully imported the KMZ (GPS Essentials-before.jpg ).  I then upgraded to 4.5.20 which tried to convert the existing database but failed.  I imported the KMZ and got the red Xs (GPS Essentials-after.jpg).  After a reboot, I tried migrating the database and was successful - the KMZ that I successfully imported on 4.4.64 displayed correctly on 4.5.20.

Same for 4.5.29 on android Samsung S10:

One way I use GPS essentials is to track certain weeds on our ranch by marking them as waypoints.
I run into problems when I export waypoints and later import them again.  The locations are imported correctly but the imported icons are not recognized and represented by a red X icon.

Here is an example.

  • I delete all waypoints and make one new waypoint in GPS Essentials > Google Maps.  The waypoint is correctly represented by a green pin (attached screenshot_1).
  • Next I export the file (WaypointsTest.kml).
  • The exported file shows the correct pin in Google Earth.
  • I again delete all waypoints in GPS Essentials > Streams
  • I import the previously exported file.
  • I look at the waypoint in GPS Essentials > Google Maps.
  • There is no green pin, just a red X (screenshot_2).

Am I doing something wrong?

I made some progress.  In the style definition (starting with <Style id="...)  icon description (starting with <Icon) Iin the href I changed http::...to https://
works now:  The icons now show the proper symbol !!!!!!!!!!
