GPS Essentials stops tracking

While using GPS essential to track my walking, I find that it often just stops tracking. Sometimes after 5 mins, sometimes after a longer time. For no apparent reason. I don't press the square (stop) key, or do anything else (as far as I am aware) that would make it stop tracking.

Related to this, is the resumption of tracking. Either when GPS essentials stops tracking by itself, or when I stop tracking by pressing the square key, I try to restart by pressing the circle-with-dot key (changed from square). When I do this, it seems as though the map updates, but the duration, length, etc. do not update. They remain where they were when tracking was stopped.

I would be most grateful for any help in solving this problem. Thank you!

You should get a message every time you start or stop tracking. If you open the track and scroll down, you should see these messages. Is there a message in the event that tracking stops by itself?

Hi Michael, thanks for your reply.

No, there is no message that shows that the tracking has stopped.I have attached screenshots of the tracking screen, as shown on the screenshots.

The orange line on the map shows where recording started and stopped. The sequence is as follows:

1. I started the track at 5:00:02. GPS Essentials started the recording and showed progress with orange line on the map. Lowest message at bottom of screen.

2. Recording stopped by itself after 6'45". Orange line stops.

3. I carry on walking for a few hundred metres (gap in orange line on map).

4. I restart the recording. Second-lowest message on screen.  Orange line on map shows progress. Display of start time,  end time, duration, etc. is not updated.

5. Recording again stops by itself. Orange line stops again.

It seems as though I may have solved the problem of the track stopping by itself. It looks like that may have been caused by a power setting in Android.

However, if I manually stop and restart the track, the display doesn't get updated.

Hi Bruce, I noticed that GPS Essentials 4.4.25 suspended tracking on my Samsung Galaxy S6 running Android 7.  With Power Saver enabled, locking the screen would prevent GPS Essentials from running even though it was in the Unmonitored Apps list and I also disabled battery usage monitoring.  I have checked for other GPS/location related services that might be affected by Battery Saver without success.  I just remember to disable Power Saver when using GPS Essentials.  The symptoms are different from yours - there is no break in the track, just teleportation from where GPS Essentials stopped running until the place where I unlocked the screen.   I had one instance months ago where GPS Essentials appeared to have stopped the running track, but have not seen that since.

I can confirm that stopping recording of a track causes the End Time, Duration, and Length to freeze even if the recording,is restarted.   Starting a new track does not make any difference.

Regards, Norbert

Thanks for that info, Norbert. It's helpful to have the power saving issue confirmed. For me (on a Huawei P10 Lite 2017), it seems to affect the tracking of FitApp and Strava (both of which use GPS tracking).

As for the track freezing, it seems like we can't do anything about this. Do we, perhaps, call it a bug and ask for a fix? That would be helpful!

Hi
I have had the same problem with my Huawei P Smart, 32 Gb memory. GPS Essentials stopped recording tracks without obvious reasons, and didn't show when recording was stopped. I got a hint, as sometimes when taking pictures with GPS Essentials, a message popped up, telling that recording was stopped due to low battery, however the battery was 80%+ full.
Therefore I tried to disable powersave in the GPS Essential set-up menu, ie. activating "keep screen on". This solved the problem, and recording a track has worked fine since. This setting should be the default.
Hope this info can help other persons with the same problem.

Regards Per

That's a bit weird, "Keep screen on" just prevents the screen from going off. You probably switch it off manually when storing the device. Does the tracking icon in the notification bar disappear when GPS Essentials stops tracking?

Hi everybody,

Sam issue here, already seen on two devices both on Android 6 and 7. No issue for old android 2.3 version.
What I found:

- I confirm that Power Saver disabled does not influence it
- I confirm that put gps essential in "unmanaged" does not influence it
- It seems to me that if I put the phone in standby while GPS essential is in the foreground (at least the dashboard, but probably also the tracking) it continues to work.
- Regarding the issue of the data not updated, it's not a bug but the normal behavior: traks are divided in "streams" and if you click on the "track name" and selct the last stream (you have two of them in your screenshot) you have the updated and updating data. I think this has been done to automatically "divide" tracks, like ascent and descent from a mountain.

I'll take a look to the powersafe option in the set-up og GPS essentials.

Thank you!

Alfonso
