I am very pleased with your (and my) application. I used it before, and I recently bought a new mobile phone, Chinese Cubot A8809. When I installed Gps Essentials (with donation plugin), I noticed that my compass is not working. No turning back. Everything else associated with the GPS works normally.
Should I set something special in the program, or is it possible that the sensor does not work, or that the new cell phone has no compass?

Check the specs of your device to see if it has a magnetic sensor. You can also install AndroSensor from Google Play to check this. If there is no magnetic sensor you can still set "Clamp Heading" to "always" in settings, then the compass will point to your direction of travel instead.

I am se to Always, but I do not see any change. Compass and arrow is still not turning.
Please, can you explain to me this:...compass will point to your direction of travel instead...

Thank You,
Regards, Darko

When you are moving, the GPS receiver can determine the azimuth from the last recent 2 locations. E.g. when the last location is south of the previous one, your direction of travel is 180°. When you enable "Clamp Heading" then GPS Essentials will show this value on the compass.

Maybe the OP has the same problem as me, I have tried a few ROMs on my ZTE skate and depending on the ROM, some apps don't point in the right direction.
GPS essential is one of those that don't point in the right direction dependign on the ROM used, google skymap is another one, while some other GPS apps always work.
I have tried the clamp heading option and this is quite hit and miss.

Hi Michael,
Downloaded the app for my work related travel in third world countries. AWESOME. you have done a great job.
Am running it on an HTC Desire V (Android 4.0.3) which does not have a magnetic compass.

The compass rose does not clamp to the bearing despite being selected to 'always'
The digital readouts of Bearing, Course etc work perfectly and so having the 'Turn' display on is currently the easiest way to see course deviation.
Is there anything else that can be done to make the compass rose clamp to the bearing?
Have you considered having Crosstrack deviation bars (XTK) on the compass display.

Keep up the good work

Dave

I might just found a bug. Unfortunately, I don't have a device without a compass and it looks like the compass is not updating properly in some cases. I just released 3.1.7 on gpsessentials.om, please give it a try and tell me if it fixes the issue.

XTE is probably the oldest planned-and-still-incomplete feature ever. I'll have a look into it...

Hey Michael, You are the man !!!!

3.1.7 now clamps to GPS derived bearing on a phone without a magnetic sensor.

I wouldn't worry too much about XTE. Only boaties and pilots can really make use of that unless you wanted to backtrack on a recorded track. (must have a play with that)

Good work
Regards Dave
