OK, I read an earlier post where someone wanted to do something incredibly simple -- like "I am here, and I want to go to a particular single waypoint I have stored".    Yes, but try as I might I could not get it to work.    Even when I selected the waypoint as a "target", I got no instructions on what direction to head, and no feedback (realtime) as to whether I was going in the correct direction and homing in on the spot.  All I got was something that said "2.1 miles to the NEXT waypoint" AFTER I was at the waypoint I had wanted to get to (I knew where it was, otherwise I would never have found it, as there were no instructions).

So, what was I trying to do?   I had recorded a number of fishing spots on Lake St Clair (a BIG lake).   I'm on the lake in a boat, and I just want to get to a particular fishing spot for which I had created a waypoint inside of a stream.   I don't want to go to all the waypoints in that stream, just one the particular one I select from where I am currently on the lake (where I am on the lake is NOT a waypoint).    So, is there an easy way to do this with some real-time feedback as to the direction to head and how far ahead the target waypoint is, and whether I am truly closing in on the particular spot or not (without switching to the next waypoint in the stream when I get there)?   If there is a way to do this, I could not figure it out.    I actually have a masters degree in Computer Science and still I could not figure it out.

Can someone please enlighten me on the SIMPLE step-by-step way to do this with GPS Essentials?  (i.e., I am where I am, and I want to go to waypoint "A" in a particular stream with instructions on how to do it and feedback that I am closing in on it.)

Many thanks,
Jerry

Hi Jerry,

Once you set the target waypoint, GPS Essentials starts navigation and you notice the upward arrow in the navigation bar.

In map view, there will be a line from your current location to the target. In compass view, an arrow indicates the direction to the target. Many of the widgets on your dashboard are helpful for navigation, e.g. distance, TTG, ETA and a few others.

I'm not sure if you're stuck with starting navigation or setting up your dashboard. I can provide step-by-step guides for you.

If you are navigating to a single waypoint, I recommend you switch of auto skip in settings, otherwise GPS Essentials will switch to the next waypoint when you pass your target.

Cheers, Michael

A very easy way is to show ¨Turn¨ in the dashboard. It shows how many degrees you have to change your course to go to the target. If it is negative you have to turn left and if positive right. Steer your boat keeping it in zero or close to zero and you will reach your target waypoint.

Well, I did not get to use my GPS Essentials app on Lake St Clair.
Several reasons. The lake was very rough the days we were there, and
when we moved along, we got sprayed with water on a regular basis. Not
an environment for use of an expensive cell phone. Second, it was
difficult to keep the boat on a certain heading given the waves hitting
the boat all the time. Lastly, the guy I went with had a Lawrence fish
finder that you could put GPS coordinates in and it would display where
you were, and where they waypoint was, and show you your path in getting
there (the track). It was waterproof, larger than a cell phone screen
and showed a lot more information. So, we used that. However, on
our smaller lake here in Ohio, I'll give it a try; especially when I'm
using a kayak that won't support the use of something larger.

Thanks to everyone for the help!
Jerry

If you don't want to afford a waterproof device, these products may come to rescue:
