Its good to see that as more and more people are using gprMax the use of forum is also growing! So I thought it was good time to post some advice on how to get the best from this group.

The intent of the forum is to be a place where people can ask general questions on using gprMax, and discuss problems and solutions together. At the moment it is mainly Antonis and I providing answers, but again as the community grows and people become more familiar with the software, hopefully others will start to provide answers as well as questions. We realise that people come to use gprMax from many different backgrounds and with different levels of experience and skill. Whilst we are happy to help all, we have put a significant effort into creating the documentation (the User Guide) that accompanies gprMax - http://docs.gprmax.com/ It contains some brief general guidance on using the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method for simulating GPR, a lot of information on how to use gprMax, a range of different example models, and a detailed worked example of a simple 2D simulation. gprMax requires some basic understanding of GPR and the FDTD method. There are plenty of resources available online, as well as books on these subjects to help you get started, for example:

  • Daniels, D. J. (2005). Ground penetrating radar. John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
  • Taflove, A., & Hagness, S. C. (2005). Computational electrodynamics: the finite-difference time-domain method. Artech house.
  • Kunz, K. S., & Luebbers, R. J. (1993). The finite difference time domain method for electromagnetics. CRC press.

So if we feel your question can be answered in the User Guide or is a very basic question on GPR or FDTD, then we probably won't respond directly to your post - we are both busy academics, and whilst we'd love to help everyone with their model we just don't have the time!

If you find what you think is a bug in the software please report it (with an example) using our Issue tracker on GitHub - https://github.com/gprMax/gprMax/issues This enables us to better manage, test, and fix any issues.

Kind regards,

Craig and Antonis
