Heritage Trust Fund Grant
Our original building is a 1906 Carnegie Library and is listed on the
National Register of Historic Places. The building serves along with a
2002 addition as the Girard Public Library. Many of you who are
regular patrons are aware of the problems that had developed in the
old building due to movement in the attic causing the walls to move
and therefore crack, not just a little bit, but a lot.
The board instructed me to look into what we needed to have done to
make the necessary repairs and stabilize the building hopefully for
years to come. The cost estimate was $104,400, but thankfully because
we are listed on the National Register we were able to apply for and
received a grant in the amount of $83,250 to help the city cover the
costs.
MTS Contracting Inc. out of Springfield, Missouri were hired to tie
the upper rafters and support to lower framing lines and sub-framing
members to reinforce roof framing by reinforcing beam framing lines
and turning them into trusses, reinforce HVAC to redistribute load,
exterior masonry repair or replace damaged masonry blocks to match and
re-point mortar, repair and paint the ceiling and plaster walls.
All the work has been completed MTS Contracting was very good to work
with and did an excellent job. It is our hope to keep our library
buildings standing to serve our City for many years to come.

Director
