Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position to develop low cost parallelised optical microscopes at the Cavendish Laboratory (Department of Physics, University of Cambridge).


The group of Prof. Pietro Cicuta seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on engineering and computing challenges in high throughput automated imaging, focusing on developing parallelised low cost imaging units for high throughput cell imaging. The motivation for this system is characterising cell types and state of infection in blood cell malaria. The role is funded by two EPSRC grants "GCRF Detailed malaria diagnostics with intelligent microscopy" and "Parallelised live microscopy for high-throughput behavioural phenotyping in malaria". It involves a tight collaboration locally with the Cambridge team developing a new healthcare hardware imaging platform, Drs Richard Bowman and Neill Campbell in Bath developing respectively low cost microscopy for developing countries and computer vision.

The project is interdisciplinary, spanning microscopy hardware and software development, and the application of this new hardware to imaging of malaria parasites. This advert seeks a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to carry out the engineering of these new technologies. The project builds on recent work by our team that had focused on automated custom microscopes in a variety of specifications and formats. The new line of work will involve pushing the technology to be rugged and affordable, and managing the hardware, image analysis and data handling challenges from high throughput recording.

The successful candidate could come from a wide range of different disciplinary backgrounds, but needs to have proven track record in instrument building and coding and ideally instrument automation. Experiences in optical design, electronics, image analysis, and work with biological samples are all desirable. The role may suit applicants with backgrounds in Engineering, Computer Science or Physics who match the description above.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years.
