It's the message number in the group's list. That tag can be altered
by me. A non-Google user can subscribe and receive email without
having to sign up. HOWEVER, if you want to use the web based features,
like starring the group / conversation, sharing / +1-ing, you need to
be logged in with a Google account.

And of course for moderation stuff.

No capabilities for file hosting. Just a vanilla mailing list / forum
type experience.

I do wonder whether an ordinary subscription receives individual posts
immediately or if there's a delay. The options I was given indicates
I will receive the individual posts once per day instead of when they
were sent. If I can't change this I might try unsubscribing from my
G+ account and resubscribing via email only.

Which is fine, there are plenty of other options for storing a list of
group member keys and a group line.

As it is I've adjusted my group line to cut out about 18 subscribers
to PGPNET and add one member of GPGNET who isn't currently on PGPNET.
As well as switching to only encrypt when specified (for now).

I am receiving them immediately. (At least, when I post, the message
is available when I fetch mail by POP a few minutes later.)

The help topic at

says that online you get the following options:-

Delivery settings for this group
Select how you would like to receive email from the group using
one of the following four settings:

Don’t send email updates: Do not receive email for group posts.
Participate in this group through only the web interface.

Send daily summaries: Receive one summary email of new activity
per day.

Send combined updates: Receive one email for every 25 new
messages.

Send me an email for every new message: Receive an email for every
new post.

Neither that page nor the "Help" email tells how to switch between
these settings by email, but fortunately when I joined I was
automatically put on individual emails. I don't know whether Google
has those commands but doesn't publicise them, or just does not have
them. The ones they do publicise, such as
<gpgnet+s...@googlegroups.com>, differ from the yahoo equivalents
by having a + instead of a -.
