The Plague by Albert Camus is one of Camus's best known novels. The novel is set in the beautiful, tumultuous French town of Oran, where Camus lives and works. The story is told by an anonymous narrator to the reader, who is caught up in the action, and cares about those living in the town, including the local priest who is out to find out what has happened to the plague's source. The novel is truly one of the scariest novels I have ever read and perhaps one of the most Gothic novels I have ever read.

Camus weaves an intricate and beautiful web of characters into this dark fantasy tale. The Plague follows the life of Countess de Sade, who is found dead in her bed at the home of her lover, Pierre Chardin. His death has left behind a secret letter from Chardin, in which he tells his mistress how he intends to leave her, and to hand over the town of Oran to his young daughter, Thierry. Chardin is also told that he has three daughters, named Marion, Cosette and Ecolette, who will look after the future of the town. The cryptic letter, the subsequent events and the mystery that surround and frames the young Ecolette, makes The Plague a wonderfully written, deeply immersive novel that has captured the imaginations of readers for decades.
The story is told through the words of the narrator, and follows his quest to find and kill the culprit. There is ominous music, reminiscent of that from The Sound of Music, as the book swirls around the main characters. As is typical of most of Camus' work, there is very little characterisation, but what there is, makes the reader feel as if they have known and are involved with the main characters from the start, long before the events unfold in the story. The Plague by Alberic has proven one of the best novels ever written by Alberic and is definitely an author to watch if only because of the excellent mystery it deals with and the way in which it keeps the reader interested throughout.
