The Sympathizer by Nguyen is the third in his series featuring Nguyen's intricate characters drawn from Vietnamese and Asian American heritage. Thanh can be credited as one of the most innovative and compelling modern poets of our times. The Sympathizer continues the tale of Nguyen'sboat, which is boarded by pirates and taken to an island to perform a menial task. When a mysterious young girl arrives on the scene and implores the sailors to return to their homeland, they do so only to find that their home has been devastated - and so are their lives.

Soon they discover that this girl, named Le Ly, knows all their travails and end up being the conduit between them and safety. Le Ly acts as a link between them through her words, as she refers to them as "we" and reminds them of what they are and what they need to be. In so doing, The Sympathizer pulls no punches as it chronicles the daily trials and tribulations of these three strangers. The themes are deep and often touching. As the story develops, the reader is also privy to the internal struggles and conflicts that these men face on a daily basis, making it not only a moving and profound read but a powerful call to action as well. A lyrical, literary masterpiece, The Sympathizer is the finest example of Vietnamese American literature I've ever had the pleasure of reading.
The author creates a vivid picture of war through his descriptions of the war-ravaged landscape and his vivid pictures of destroyed cities. Through his writing, Thanh uses powerful imagery to paint a portrait of Vietnam. Although he starts off with the story of a lovable puppy named Le Ly, the book eventually delves into the emotional torture and trauma suffered by these characters. The book has a dark, underlying tone, similar to that of his other books, but never drags down. In my opinion, this book is a definite must-read for all lovers of fiction. Highly Recommended!
