Meant to Be is the story of two young lovers that get stolen from their native Pakistan, on a bright sunny day in July 2021. They are reported missing by their respective families, all of which seem very keen to find out what has happened. Whilst doing some research for an article I read on the internet a number of people expressed similar feelings about their own family, some even saying they had planned to raise their children as Islamic veils (haramis). It seems to be part of their religion to hide the convert, so perhaps the answer is more complicated than we first thought.

I liked Meant to Be, though I am not sure why, maybe it is because the plot did not have much of an explanation or it could also be that I got bored quickly. The book is about a girl called Zahra, who was married off when she was 16 and has now turned back to her 'former' life. She has converted to Islam and has lost everything since then. The novel starts when she goes out with her friend Mika to a disco to meet a man they have both been talking about, whom she tries to impress but he backs off.
Mika's brother Adeel comes along with his friend Mustafa to accompany her but soon after the three of them get lost in the car park and Adeel ends up having a panic attack and crashes the car. Zahra thinks she has made a mistake by converting to Islam because she feels she lacks the courage to face her boyfriend and that she is no longer beautiful. Shortly after this the two boys return and Zahra gets very angry that she thinks she may have hurt Mustafa and wants to leave him at that point. The next few days and events unfold and it turns out that Mustafa is well and alive and the anger vanishes when he realises what has happened to Zahra. However, the boys are soon captured and taken away to live in a cave as prisoners.
