The Sinner by Singer is a short novel written in Yiddish primarily that tells the tale of Jacob, an educated scholar being sold as a slave to work in a Jewish settlement following the Khmelnitsky pogrosky Laws. One day, he meets an old man who is the slave master's son and later, he falls in love with this woman who is smarter and more knowledgeable than him. A storm breaks out between them which would change their lives forever. This Yiddish book is subtitled The Slaves of the Aviv. The novel has received many awards and has been made into a number of films and TV series.

Singer wrote the novel in a very simple yet eloquent manner. He used very few descriptive words and presented his story in a simple way so that it could be understood by anyone. This was evident from the use of very few descriptive words throughout the novel. One can sense that Singer wanted to present a message to the reader in order to help him understand the experiences that the characters go through in the book. The language is not complex and there is no need for one to have to take many notes in order to grasp what is happening. The reader will be able to put together the various events that take place very easily.
The plot of The slave by Singer is not really a deep one and does not explore themes that are important to a person's growth and wholeness. However, these elements do make this novel worth reading. It presents an interesting story and is not an easy read. The reader will experience a feeling of joy and satisfaction after reading this novel.
