I've been compiling a bunch of GIS datasets from the ABS into a single dataset, containing:

- suburbs
- postcodes
- electoral districts
- etc - hopefully more to come.

Possible uses:

- for a given XY point, return the suburb, postcode, etc
- summarise the whole dataset to show a matrix of suburb to postcode, suburb to electoral district, etc
- join this to other datasets like crime, population, etc

It's too large to upload to the wiki, so come and see me if you'd like to do something with it.

That sounds useful, how big is it? I'm off site tonight.

It's around 250Mb megabytes and in a proprietary ESRI GIS format, so not really suitable for sending on.

But exports of the tabular matrices are more manageable. Let me know if there's a combination you want (suburb to postcode, etc) and I can email it.

Is there any restriction in hosing this information and making it available over an API call?

not sure, I guess that depends on the license restrictions from the ABS website, since all the information was originally sourced from there.

I'm happy to pass it on if you're able to host it somewhere

I'm also interested in getting a clear answer on this, as I am bringing a complete copy of the census datasets with me this weekend, and would rather not have to worry about this before using them (though i'm not sure what i'll be using them *for* yet)

I've put the matrices at http://docs.google.com/View?id=dfgdtb2k_269hfgsmqg9 - feel free to host these via an API if you have the means.

See the links on that page to the ABS website for the provenance of the original datasets.

John Allsopp may have contacts at ABS who can assist with legalities?

Cheers,
Steve

Guys,

I have already dropped a note to a friend at ABS about the data transformation you've been working on.

I expect she's already looking into ABS's position

Cheers
