Launch of Space Shuttle Discovery, commanded by Scott Horowitz, occurred
today at 5:10:14 p.m. EDT at the opening of the planar window. Mission
managers decided to launch five minutes earlier than the announced preferred
in-plane launch time due to advancing clouds that might may been reason for
concern. There were no violations of launch weather criteria at the time of
launch.
Discovery successfully achieved orbit about eight minutes after liftoff from
KSC's launch complex 39A. Discovery and her crew will spend the next two
days catching up to the International Space Station for a docking that is
scheduled for Sunday afternoon. The crew will then spend the next eight days
transferring equipment to the Station and performing two space walks. Also,
the expedition crews will exchange places leaving Commander Frank Culbertson
and two cosmonauts aboard for the next four mounts. Landing of Discovery is
set for Aug. 22 at about 1 p.m. at KSC's Shuttle Landing Facility.
