Washington Independent Writers (WIW) 2001 Technology Conference this coming
Saturday, Nov. 17, at the University Club, 1135 16th Street N.W.,
Washington, D.C.

in the Washington, D.C., area, the early registration discount deadline for
the conference has been extended to this coming Wednesday, Nov. 14.

- Reservations received by Wednesday, Nov. 14: WIW members, $130;
non-members, $175; membership + event, $215; student/senior members, $65;
student/senior non-members, $110; student/senior membership + event, $150.

- Reservations after Wednesday, Nov. 14: WIW members, $145;
non-members, $190; membership + event, $230; student/senior members, $80;
student/senior non-members, $125; student/senior membership + event, $165.

- At the door: Add $10 to the after-Nov. 14 fees.

A live Internet presentation by research expert Alan Schlein, author of
"Find It Online: The Complete Guide to Online Research."

Track B: Effective Online Promotion

The Internet offers numerous methods of marketing and self-promotion. Hear
firsthand experiences from writers and promoters who have reaped the
benefits of successful online PR. Speakers: Peter Abresch (moderator),
novelist and creator of BookMarc; Douglas Clegg, best-selling novelist;
Carmen Leal, author of WriterSpeaker.com; Kathy McShea, principal, Emerald
Strategies.

10:30 - 11:45 a.m.

Exciting Opportunities for Writers in the Information Age

Technology is a blessing for free-lance writers, if they know where to look
for work. This panel will describe paying online markets, markets for
writers in the technology sector, how to land contract work online, and the
rising demand for online writing and editing skills in corporate America.
Speakers: Linda Wolfe Keister (moderator), author, editor and writing
instructor; Jason Kelly, president, SnapSheet.com; Peter Ognibene, author
and proposal consultant.

Luncheon and Keynote Speaker: Technology and the Education Market

Speaker: Stephen Hoffman, president and chief operating officer, Blackboard
Inc., will describe the new multi-billion dollar e-education marketplace.

1:35 - 2:50 p.m.

E-publishing and Online Distribution

No industry has been affected by the surge of Internet business in the last
five years more significantly than publishing. Digital texts, including
print-on-demand publishing, electronic archives, online periodicals and
digital displays, are quickly changing the way information is assimilated,
distributed and sold. How can writers take advantage of this new era of
publishing? E-publishing experts will bring us up to date on this
fast-paced segment of the industry. Speakers: John Harnesh, Infinity
Publishing; Todd Hayes, UndergroundE Corp.; Michael Jensen, National
Academy Press; David Seaman, director, Electronic Text Center, University
of Virginia.

Track A: Web Site Development and Cyber Terrorism

Every writer needs an e-mail address and a Web site. Specialists will guide
participants through the process of creating a professional presence on the
World Wide Web and define necessary elements vs. features that may be a
waste of time and money. This panel will also cover cyberterrorism threats
and how writers can protect themselves. Speakers: Bob Hoeckele, Computer
Sciences Corp.; Chandu Ketkar, chief information officer, IXI Corp; Neil
Singer, president, Coolthinking.net.

Track B: Tools of the Trade

What kind of hardware and software does today's remote writer need? What
are the pros and cons of the various Internet connections and service
providers? Panel speakers will highlight effective technologies, products,
best practices and must-have tools for the home-office writer. Speakers:
Evelyn Kent, journalist; Mick O'Leary, author, "The Online 100"; Steve
Wildstrom, technology columnist, Business Week magazine; Chuck Wilsker,
journalist and executive director, International Telework Association and
Council.
