I'm running a fresh build of the developer's version, and a fresh dl of
the developer's cases. Running the OWS scenario, I find everything a
reasonable match to observations except the temperature profiles. If I
leave the SWR out, using only the heat flux, the ocean temperature drops
well below zero in the winter, and if I turn the SWR on, temperatures in
the ocean increase well beyond any observations. Any thoughts would be
appreciated.

Dan, I am confused, are you talking about the ocean temperature profiles
being wrong in the test case or the forcing files ( air temperature???

BTW, what is your restoring set to???

Hi Nadja,
I am using an unmodified fresh download of the developer's build and the
developer's cases from the git repository, as of Dec 1st. If you look
at, e.g., the Liverpool Bay test case, the temperature profiles sync up
pretty well with the observations, but at OWS Papa, something is clearly
off.
Cheers,
Dan

Hi Dan,

I know this thread is really old, but I was wondering if you found the solution to the problem.

I am new to GOTM, and recently downloaded both gotm-4.0.0 and gotm-git (4.1.0?) versions and tested to run the 'ows_papa' test case with default settings. As you described, SST profiles are the same between the two runs, but a significant difference appears for vertical temperature profiles (please refer to the figure. left: 4.1.0 right: 4.0.0).

No T restoring was done for both cases as shown below (obs.nml):

======4.0.0=======
 &tprofile
   t_prof_method = 2,
   t_analyt_method = 3,
   z_t1 = 30.0,
   t_1 = 20.0,
   z_t2 = 40.0,
   t_2 = 15.0,
   t_obs_NN = 0.000256,
   t_prof_file = 'tprof.dat',
   TRelaxTauM = 1e+15,
   TRelaxTauB = 1e+15,
   TRelaxTauS = 1e+15,
   TRelaxBott = 0.0,
   TRelaxSurf = 0.0,
/
======4.1.0=======
 &tprofile
  t_prof_method=   2
  t_analyt_method= 3
  z_t1=            30.
  t_1=             20.
  z_t2=            40.
  t_2=             15.
  t_obs_NN=        2.56e-4
  t_prof_file=     'tprof.dat'
  TRelaxTauM=      1.e15
  TRelaxTauB=      1.e15
  TRelaxTauS=      1.e15
  TRelaxBott=      0.
  TRelaxSurf=      0.
 /

Please let me know if you have any updates on this problem.

Regards,
Hakase Hayashida

Hello Hakase,

Maybe briefly check that the forcing data set has the air temperature in
the correct row. I recall in one of those examples the rows were
switched in the meteo file and it caused freezing temperatures at OSP....

Hi Nadja,

I discovered the problem: 'swr_method=0' in 'airsea.nml'.

By switching to 'swr_method=2', I got the temperature profile much like the one in the 4.0.0 version. This switch is necessary for biological models too.

Thanks,
