Hey GOTers,
Dr. D has filled us in on two internship opportunitites. The first is an unpaid posiition with the mayor's office in houston, TX and the second is a paid position with the Florida Cooperative Extension service (which i think has to do with nature). Check them out.
Summer Internship Opportunity/ In House Consultant / Analyst/ Office of the Mayor, City of Houston, Texas
With 23,000 employees and a $4 billion dollar annual budget, the City of Houston is the fourth largest municipality in the country with 2.23 million people spanning 640 square miles. The City of Houston division sponsoring this internship is the Office of Mayor Annise D. Parker, with the position coordinated out of the Office of the Mayor's Chief of Staff.
The Office of the Chief of Staff is focused particularly on Citywide operations, as well as special and major initiatives. Examples of current projects include four major departmental consolidations (Finance, HR, IT, Fleet), revamping the City's energy forecasting and hedging model, financing and building the new Houston Dynamo Soccer Stadium, and launching electric vehicles in the Houston metro area. Whether an intern is interested in Finance, Sustainability, Economic Development, Public Safety, or otherwise, within the Mayor's Office we can find that opportunity. Notably, the campaign for Mayor Parker's second term of office has also just begun.
What We're Looking For: We are seeking interns that can provide insightful analytical skills, as well as demonstrate leadership and sensitivity in a difficult financial environment for the City. We are looking for candidates with great potential and outstanding capabilities in four general areas that are critical to success in day-to-day work:
* Problem solving. Interns will be helping the City solve its toughest and most urgent problems. You should have superior intellectual abilities and a practical sense of what works in complex organizations.
* Achievement. Work in the Mayor's Office can require tremendous energy, determination, and judgment, particularly when working with multiple stakeholders under tight deadlines.
* Highly Developed Interpersonal Skills. Interns will work closely with a wide range of people in their daily jobs, as well as City executive level staff and outside officials. This calls for strong communication abilities—particularly when addressing conflicting points of view.
* Leadership. Leading people and fostering productive teamwork are critical to success in the City. Excellent leadership skills are needed to bring people together to drive positive change within organizations.
More specific requirements include proficiency in Microsoft Office (particularly Excel & PowerPoint). Experience in SAP, ArcGIS, and similar programs is a plus. In short, we need exceptional people who can make a difference with the most difficult problems occurring in one of the nation's largest cities. In exchange for an intern's commitment, opportunities will be provided to enhance your financial and consulting skillsets, as well as build your business and public sector knowledge and acumen. Moreover, interns will be given exposure to high level government officials and related functions.
Miscellaneous Details: With a hiring freeze, layoffs, and furloughs ongoing in the City of Houston, the internship is unfortunately unpaid. Assistance will be providing in locating housing and becoming acquainted with the City. Graduate degree level interns in the last year originated from Harvard University, Duke University, and Rice University -- this will be the first year this particular internship is also advertised to undergraduate students.
INTERNSHIP: Florida Cooperative Extension Service/Graham Center for Public Service Internship Program

We will know after about Feb. 11 which county agents have submitted proposals for an internship in their county.
Interns should be college juniors and seniors and have a 2.8 GPA. Interns are not limited to a major in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences; the internship will also be of interest to those minoring in Public Leadership through the Graham Center for Public Service, potential minors or members of our affiliate organizations.
