Can you use a gyb backup as an off-line archive, and restore specific
messages if needed?

I'm on a Windows7 SP1 PC (sometimes WinXP SP3) running GYB, running
Got Your Back 0.16 Alpha.

Once a mailbox is backed up, you can use Windows to search the archive
folders and view the .eml file messages. But an attachment is a jumble
of code and needs to be restored to a gmailbox to use it.

I tried this command to restore a single message:

C:\gyb>gyb --email newma...@csps.com --action restore --folder "c:
\gyb\oldmailbox" --label-restored "restore" --two-legged two-legged-
key.txt --search "after:2012/8/28 before:2012/8/31"

However, it started restoring the entire archive. Can you combine a
search with a restore like this?

Thank you.

Were you viewing the .elm file as a text file (using something like Notepad) or with an e-mail client (like Outlook or Outlook Express)?  I would think that if viewed with an e-mail client you could also view/download the attachment.

As to the restore, I believe that should work.  Did you try other searches, for example on the subject text?

Searches are ignored for restores.  You can provide a list of labels to restore, but there is no other way to limit the restore.

Thank you for your response.

I am using notepad to view the eml files. I dug up outlook 2007 and dragged an eml file into the inbox window, but it opened a new message with the eml as an attachment, it didn't want to view it. I believe Outlook only likes .msg files. I could try downloading thunderbird, but  we "went google" big time, and no longer install any email client for our users.

I tried this search, it again restored everything, the results were not filtered.
gyb --email new...@csps.com --action restore --folder "c:\gyb\oldmail" --label-restored "restore" --two-legged two-legged-key.txt --search "subject:Expiring Sept"

Windows comes with and email client that can open the files (Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail,..).

There are also utilities available to extract the attachments from a saved email file.

It would not be hard to add restore by message-id, but I am not sure how big a demand there is for it.

This is working rather well. GYB makes windows searchable folders and .eml files. Outlook Express in XP, or Windows Live Mail in Win7, opens the message files and the attachments are available. Setup the email client to imap to gmail, and the messages can be Moved to a folder, or just sent to someone if needed.

This makes an easy and practical way to archive old messages when someone exits, or when someone's gmailbox is nearing quota.

Thank you all for your help in sorting thru the details.

Eliz.
