Using GYB to restore a group's conversation history?

Hi all:

A team here accidentally deleted a group that had a pretty extensive conversation history.

According to https://support.google.com/a/answer/9664762?hl=en#:~:text=When%20you%20delete%20a%20group,group's%20address%20are%20not%20delivered it's not possible to restore a group after deletion.

But I was thinking that we might still be able to get the conversation history at least mostly back because those messages are probably still in someone's inbox. Specifically, I think we could:

1. Use the "Selective Backups With Gmail Searching" feature to back up all of the messages from someone's mailbox (after they've given permission of course!) that match the search "to:grou...@example.edu"
   
2. We then use the --action-restore-group command to restore that backup to the new incarnation of the groupname group.
   

Does that make sense? Will that work? Anything else I need to know/do to make it work?

I've never tried but I can't see why it wouldn't work. Trick would be finding the right user who never deletes messages from the group.
