Hi, how do I transfer an alias email address to become a collaborative inbox? I don't want the data to be deleted, and I want to use the same email address as the one that is currently the alias. I asked someone how I can do this and they directed me to Got Your Back, how do I do this?

Hi there,

Guess you got sent here from reddit.

GYB is used in 2 steps.
  1. Perform a backup: https://github.com/jay0lee/got-your-back/wiki#performing-a-backup (this downloads the email to a machine that you are running GYB on to a folder GYB-GMail-Backup-user[at]domain.com)
  2. Restore to a group https://github.com/jay0lee/got-your-back/wiki#--action-restore-group (gyb --email group[at]domain.com --action restore-group --local-folder GYB-GMail-Backup-user[at]domain.com)

Hi, when trying to sign up for GYB this shows up. I can't figure out how to get my client id, there's no instructions anywhere.

Hi Michael,

Once you click on Credentials it should be listed there under Oauth 2.0 Client IDs.

The instructions above are for GAM and the screenshots are a bit dated, but the steps should be similar.

Hi, I think I did a backup to a folder on my desktop. Now, instead of having a folder titled mic...@rialtos.co like in this tutorial I'm watching, there are two folders, 2018 and 2020. What do I do to restore this now? Also, do I need to backup all alias accounts connected to this one, or just this main account?

What command did you run exactly?

The folders you see (2018, 2020) and the sqlite file typically goes into a folder GYB-GMail-B...@domain.com

You would need to do something like

gyb --email gr...@domain.com --action restore-group --local-folder folderName --service-account --use-admin super...@domain.com

I ran this command: gyb --email mic...@rialtos.co --local-folder "D:\GYB"

What info would I need to replace in this command? (gyb --email gr...@domain.com --action restore-group --local-folder folderName --service-account --use-admin super...@domain.com
)

Looks like it went to D:\GYB because you specified the folder.

You would need to replace -
-email group [at] domain.com
--local-folder folderName
--use-admin superadmin [at] domain.com

What would --use-admin superadmin [at] domain.com be?

Also, is it okay to use the  D:\GYB folder or do I need to change it?

Should I delete the 2018/2020 folders, .cfg file, and .sqlite file before backing up again?

Also, will this work? Sorry for so many questions

gyb --email mic...@rialtos.co --action restore-group --local-folder "D:\GYB" --service-account --use-admin super mic...@rialtos.co

No you shouldn't have to do another backup unless you want to. You can move the files/folders. I've never seen cfg before, but I assume it's because you didn't use --service-account option during backup, which is fine.

The restore-group command should work as long as you properly authorized the service account client ID on https://admin.google.com/ac/owl/domainwidedelegation.

You can check by running
gyb --email mic...@rialtos.co --action check-service-account

Have you already created a group called michael [at] rialtos.co? you need to specify a valid group email address.

Change the email address after --email.

What do you mean group? I'm not sure what that is, my main email address that I use in gsuite is mic...@rialtos.co though

Collaborative inbox = group. You need a group email address to use.

Right now, I work in a team of 2 with both of us having 1 personal email and 1 alias email so 2 and 2. I want to make the alias emails turn into collaborative inboxes for the future, will I need to delete these aliases first and make them into collaborative inboxes? Also, if I delete an alias email, does it delete its emails or do they stay in the parent email address?

You can create any group, then remove the alias from the user account and make that an alias of the group or rename the group.

I see, and the emails already sent to that alias won't be deleted?

No. Alias simply tells Google where to deliver the email. Removing an alias doesn't cause anything to be deleted in the actual inbox.

I see, thanks! Is there any way to know whether a group member has replied to an email sent to a collaborative inbox?
