Excellent!

Nice to see that you are listening to your "costumers", hehe.

This will make thinks a lot easier.

Am I the only user that finds the Issue Tracker difficult to use and far less informative than this Google Groups forum?

First, it appears that the only "Registered" user of the Tracker is Andy, consequently all the items are listed as submitted by Anonymous or as I like to say Anonymouse!

Perhaps because we are not all registered or more likely because its not supported, the entries are not threads and no one can comment on anyone's posting.  The result is multiple entries like 188 and 191 where the latter is an update apparently provided by the original poster.

No notification by Tracker back to the unregistered poster and no apparent way to receive notifications, summary or detailed emails regarding new or updated postings.

The beauty of the Google Groups forums is that they facilitate communication among users as well as with the developer.  I honestly feel like we have lost a great resource or at least compromised its value.

Andy, I understand why you need a mechanism for tracking bugs and prioritizing new feature/function requests.  While Tracker might be a workable solution for you to document in YOUR words your own "Got To Do List", I think you need to revisit your decision to open it up to your customers.

There's no reason that people who post there can't also discuss here.
At least the bugtracker has some form of structure, otherwise the same
topic comes up again and again in a 2- or 3 month cycle. Knowing what
is a priority, what isn't, what is out of scope or just technically
impossible can be tracked and looked up in a bug tracker; there is no
way to do that with a mailing list other than read all of the archives
and somehow make a mental for yourself of topic to get an idea of
where things stand.

Of course a bug tracker needs to be maintained a bit, having the
duplicates deleted or merged, completed things marked as such,
suggestions need to be either 'never', 'someday', 'soon', or whatever;
it seems like Andy's tracking that quite well. Maybe the anonymous
posting can be turned off, there's always improvements to be made, but
a structured process is much better than 'fire an email to the list
which then promptly disappears into the void'.

No question that the developer or developers need a tracking mechanism for both Bugs and Feature/Function Requests.  Only the developers however can decide if something is truly a Bug that needs fixing or a Feature/Function under consideration or scheduled for implementation.  Exposing the information to the user community is also a great idea but allowing just anyone to add to the list only creates more work for the developers as they now have to constantly be monitoring both their regular product forum and their tracking system for updates.  Keeping users focused on the forum as a place to report what a user thinks is a bug or to request a new feature allows the whole community to comment, solve problems, offer work arounds or refine a feature/function request.  We also get email notifications of updates if we want them.  This takes a huge load off the developer only requiring them to monitor new posts to see if they need to make a comment.

I really like GTD and want Andy to spend as much time working on the next version as possible.  Given this is probably not a full time activity he needs all the help he can get and as few distractions as possible!

its unfortunate that tools like Google Groups doesn't support both functions.  There are many Forum tools out there and perhaps some have that feature but also require small developers to setup, maintain or worse, pay for, the infrastructure that hosts the Forum.

Take a closer look at some of the posts on the GTD Tracker and I think you will see what I mean.
