Hi all,
This past Monday, I attended the WRAB (Water Resources Advisory Board) meeting. One of the topics presented was the mapping of the Boulder Slough (which I mis-pronounced ... it should be 'slew' :).
During the public comment period, I stated that I was a member of GGNA and was there to observe what transpired with the mapping of the Boulder Slough, and to express our neighborhood association's interest in being involved with the mitigation projects that will eventually follow. I also mentioned appreciation of our having a chance to walk around the neighborhood with Katie Knapp, the city engineer working on the mapping.
Some pertinent information:
Here's a quick outline of the process that occurs for flood management in the city:
- Mapping
- Mitigation Planning
- CIP (Capital Improvement Projects)
- CEAP (Community and Environmental Assessment Process)
- Construction
- Remapping
More information on this process can be found at
https://bouldercolorado.gov/flood/flood-mitigation-projects. This site has a link to a pdf of the schedule so the timeline is visible for various projects in the city. (For those who were there, I brought a hard copy of this to a GGNA meeting a while ago.)
For the Boulder Slough, the mapping that had been started before the 2013 floods, but put on hold due to ongoing work on Boulder Creek, was presented to WRAB for approval. The wording of the agenda item was:
"Public hearing and Consideration of Motions to Recommend Adoption of Floodplain Mapping Revisions for Lower Bear Canyon Creed and Upper Boulder Slough."
WRAB voted to adopt these maps. They can be seen here:
To be clear, the Boulder Slough had not been carefully mapped prior to this effort. Katie Knapp walked through the Goss-Grove Neighborhood to get feedback from residents on the 2013 flood. This information was used to check assumptions made by the model for the floodplain mapping, but the maps were mainly based on LiDAR (elevation) data.
Also, this mapping may or may not affect the mitigation projects that directly relate to our neighborhood as most of this mapping is north of Canyon. We also need to pay (more) attention to the Boulder Creek Master Plan that will be coming out of the Urban Drainage & Flood Control District (UDFCD).
I'm happy to answer what questions I can.
Cheers,
Diane (Fritz)
