Dear Neighbors,
Goss-Grove is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Boulder and has a unique history.
Our neighborhood used to be home to Hispanic and African American residents who were farm laborers, small business owners and miners. It was what would now be called a 'red-lined' neighborhood. The history is now in the hands of a few founders who want to share that history with us.
One such pioneer of Civil Rights and community activism was Emma Martinez. Her story is rich and engaging. The park on 21st and Canyon, The Emma Gomez Martinez Park, is named for her because of her contribution. However, there is much more to the thick history of our neighborhood and the people who now hold the story want to share some of it with us.
Saturday May 22nd, we will be honoring the history of our neighborhood, Emma Gomez Martinez and other past residents of Goss-Grove, by planting a demonstration Pollinator Garden at the EGM park. The planting will start at 8:30 a.m and the garden dedication and presentation will follow and begin at 10:00 a.m.
You need not do any planting to attend the dedication and presentation. However, if you'd like to be part of the planting, or have children who would like to plant, we'd love to have you join in at 8:30 a.m.
Presenters will include Thomas Martinez, Emma's son, as well as past resident and cultural historian, Phil Hernandez. I will speak a bit about the importance of Native Plant gardening for pollinators. We are planning a fun and brief ceremony.
Some participants may take home growing trays that we will hand containing moss plugs and seeds to be taken home for germination. This is very educational for children and adults alike.
Please consider attending this special event. Infrequently will the history of our neighborhood be showcased and honored.
Please RSVP if you think you will make it and
specify if you're attending for planting and ceremony of just one of those events, to andrea.m...@gmail.com
Thank you so much and hope to see you next Saturday, March 22nd.
Sincerely,
Andrea Montoya
