In 1947, before Sputnik ushered in the space age, scientists conducting the Small Steps Program in New Mexico pieced together these first images of Earth taken by a camera on a V-2 rocket more than 100 miles in space. Prior to the V-2 rocket launches, the highest point for making Earth images was 13.7 miles from the Explorer II balloon in 1935.

This first image of weather systems over the entire sunlit side of Earth is made up of 450 images taken by TIROS-9 over a 24-hour period on Feb. 13, 1965. During each 2-hour orbit, two television cameras sent images to radio ground stations in Alaska and Virginia, which then relayed the data to Washington where they were converted into pictures.

The Applications Technology Satellite (ATS-1) carried a black-and-white weather camera which transmitted the first full-disk Earth images from geosynchronous orbit. On Dec. 22, 1966, ATS-1 captured this image of Earth and the Moon together. ATS-1 was 22,300 miles from Earth and more than 270,000 from the Moon when the photo was taken.

From 898 million miles away, Earth appears as a tiny blue dot in this wide-angle photograph from the Cassini spacecraft. The Moon is seen just to the right in this image. The only wide-angle Cassini footprint image that shows the Earth-Moon system, it is the third time Earth was captured from the outer solar system, but the first time humans knew in advance that it was happening. The Cassini-Huygens mission, which was terminated in 2017, was a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency.

I wrote a quick script which maps an RGB image into a grayscale image, but does so such that each range of colors only occupies a specific range of intensities. For my earth example, I mapped anything blue (ocean-like) to 0.9. That image looked like this:

The image's subject is the billion-star-containing UGC 8091, an irregular dwarf galaxy located within the constellation Virgo, some 7 million light-years from Earth. To create the luminous, chromatic effect we see, scientists compiled data captured by the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3 and Advance Camera for Surveys between 2006 and 2021.

When describing location, it is common to mention the city, state, or country as a location descriptor. It is also common to talk about landmarks that may be nearby. Another way to describe location is to use reference lines to describe coordinates, or absolute position, on the globe.

Two types of imaginary reference lines are used to locate positions or points and to make accurate globes and maps. These lines are called parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude. Two of these imaginary reference lines, the equator and the prime meridian, are called primary reference lines because they are where we start the numbering system.

Lines of latitude and longitude form an imaginary global grid system, shown in Fig. 1.17. Any point on the globe can be located exactly by specifying its latitude and longitude. This system is essential for ships at sea that cannot locate their positions using landmarks or coastal navigational aids such as buoys or channel markers. This system is just as useful for people on land when hiking, driving, or surveying an environment.

To locate a point on a globe exactly, degrees of latitude and longitude are further subdivided into minutes and seconds. In latitude and longitude measurements, minutes and seconds do not refer to time. Instead, they refer to parts of an angle. But, like with time, there are 60 minutes in a degree (just as there are 60 minutes in an hour). Similarly, there are 60 seconds in a minute of time and 60 seconds in a minute of longitude or latitude.

If the latitude and longitude coordinates of a location are known, it can be pinpointed on a map or globe. Knowing the spherical coordinates of a location is useful for people when hiking, diving, or surveying an environment. Sophisticated navigational aids use latitude and longitude to give directions when driving and flying. The spherical coordinate system is essential for ships at sea that cannot locate their positions using landmarks or coastal navigation aids like buoys or channel markers.

You can also stamp Images on clear sheets. Then paint them and use the same way. I also drew designs on the outside of the globe near the top without blocking the view of the photo with glue and sprinkled with glitter. They turned out awesome!

You can use atmospheric data to help correct image data from other sensors, or you can study it in its own right. The Earth Engine catalog includes atmospheric datasets such as ozone data from NASA's TOMS and OMI instruments and the MODIS Monthly Gridded Atmospheric Product.

Landsat, a joint program of the USGS and NASA, has been observing the Earth continuously from 1972 through the present day. Today the Landsat satellites image the entire Earth's surface at a 30-meter resolution about once every two weeks, including multispectral and thermal data.

The Copernicus Program is an ambitious initiative headed by the European Commission in partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA). The Sentinels include all-weather radar images from Sentinel-1A and -1B, high-resolution optical images from Sentinel 2A and 2B, as well as ocean and land data suitable for environmental and climate monitoring from Sentinel 3.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensors on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites have been acquiring images of the Earth daily since 1999, including daily imagery, 16-day BRDF-adjusted surface reflectance, and derived products such as vegetation indices and snow cover.

High-resolution imagery captures the finer details of landscapes and urban environments. The US National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) offers aerial image data of the US at one-meter resolution, including nearly complete coverage every several years since 2003.

Data from other satellite image sensors is available in Earth Engine as well, including night-time imagery from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program's Operational Linescan System (DMSP-OLS), which has collected imagery of night-time lights at approximately 1-kilometer resolution continuously since 1992.

Mial was not able to stop Globe Magazine from publishing the deathbed image, which he accused Price of peddling to tabloids in an "ongoing desperate attempt" to profit from his death, the website states.
