It printed in black and white at a fairly reasonable rate, about $0.03 per page or $14.11 per ream of paper. However, its color printing costs were the highest of any model we tested, clocking in at about $0.11 per page or $56.09 per ream. These color printing costs, combined with a fairly high retail price, gave the M283fdw an estimated lifetime cost of $645. This was the second highest lifetime cost that we calculated.
For printing simple graphics, such as line charts and bar graphs, it was one of the best models we tested. Lines and bars had bright vivid colors and looked bold and solid. Even under our microscope we were only able to notice trace amounts of pixelation in these types of graphics. It did lose some points in this category for photo quality. In high-resolution photos colors looked a bit oversaturated and dark areas looked muddled and lacked clarity. Pixelation was much more apparent in photos than in simple graphics, particularly in light areas of images. While the photos weren't great, they would certainly pass muster for the occasional image printed in a report or newsletter.
The M283fdw is a situation where you get what you pay for. The M283fdw is the most expensive printer we tested. It is common for printers to be available from online retailers for much less than the manufacturer's standard retail price. At the time of this writing the M283fdw could be found online for much less than the list price, which is still a pretty hefty price tag. This price, along with expensive color toner, also gave the M283fdw one of the highest estimated lifetime costs that we calculated. However, the M283fdw was also far and away the best performer that we tested. While we can't say the M283fdw is an amazing value, you are getting a top notch performer at a correspondingly top end price.
The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw is an all-in-one color laser printer. It works with the HP 206A and 206X (high-yield) toner cartridges. It connects via Wi-Fi, USB, or Ethernet, supports Apple AirPrint and Mopria Print Service, and can print directly off a USB flash drive. It has a touch-sensitive color display and scanner with an automatic document feeder.
The HP Color LaserJet Pro M283fdw is good for family use if you only plan on printing documents. This printer produces high-quality black and color documents, but like most laser printers, it isn't ideal for photo printing, as printed pictures look muted and lacking in detail. The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw is better than the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw for most uses. The M479fdw takes less time to warm up and prints color documents faster, and it's cheaper to maintain because its toner cartridges yield more prints. Also, it can scan double-sided sheets automatically in a single pass, while the M283fdw can only do it manually through software.
The Canon Color imageCLASS MF753Cdw/MF751Cdw and the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw are nearly identical in features. The Canon's scanner has extendable lid hinges, making it easier to close the lid over thicker items like textbooks and magazines. It also produces higher-quality scans and can process double-sided sheets automatically in a single pass, whereas the HP can only scan double-sided sheets through software. However, the HP scans much faster through its automatic feeder. The Canon yields more black and color prints, but its cartridges are more expensive, resulting in a slightly higher cost per print.
The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw and the Brother MFC-L2750DW are both all-in-one laser printers. However, the HP can print in color, while the Brother can only print in black. If you only need to print black-and-white documents, the Brother is a better choice because it yields more pages per cartridge and prints significantly faster. As for the scanner, the HP scans faster, but it needs two passes to scan double-sided sheets, while the Brother can do it in a single pass. The Brother also produces higher-quality scans with more fine details and better color reproduction.
This printer yields a large number of black and color prints, meaning you won't need to replace the toner cartridges regularly. You can further increase the yield with XL cartridges (HP 206X). The HP Smart app warns you when the toner is low, but the printer will keep printing even if the quality has degraded. The HP Color LaserJet Pro M282nw and HP Color LaserJet Pro M283fdn variants use the HP 207A toner cartridges, which are identical to the HP 206A cartridges but sold in Europe only.
The scan quality is good. Black text looks clear, but white text on a colored background is harder to see. Colors are okay; they look a tad washed out. Not all of the finer elements come through clearly, which isn't ideal if you're looking to digitize graphics or photos.
The print quality for color documents is outstanding. Text looks clear, colors look vibrant, and all the finer elements are visible. The printing pattern is visible in colored areas but not in every color.
