There used to be a railroad crossing on East Washington, but it has been torn up. This is odd since the new bike path from Eighth Street leads right to it and it connected to the relatively new path on the east side of the railroad and now connects to the path along the new U.S. 33 to East Madison. Does anyone know if this closing is permanent, and if so, why? I’ve crossed their numerous time by just lifting my bike up, and I would suppose others will do the same, unless a barrier is erected there, which would be a real shame, given the investment in paths on both sides of the track. What gives? Closing this crossing defeats the whole purpose of the trails on either side of the tracks in this area.

That’s great news.

Hi Glen and others,
We have been continually contacting the railroad to find out when they will be reinstalling the crossing. Previously they assured me that it was on their list and they were planning on scheduling it when they had other paving jobs in the area, but did not give me a timeline. I just contacted them again and was informed that they are planning on installing the crossing back next week. So weather permitting, they should be installing it soon.
Thanks,

I’ve wondered the same. I know the RR can be difficult to persuade to get things done, but leaving it like it is seems dangerous and eliminating the crossing would promote trespassing since it is the only viable way to make good use of the otherwise wonderful bike path. I’m getting tired of lifting my bike over it as well. Hope the crossing will get restored soon.
